Sister Rosetta Tharpe is often cited as the ‘Godmother of Rock’N’Roll’, and her 1944 song ‘Strange Things Happening Every Day’ is a clear showcase of her proto-rock style that would later develop into famous Rock’N’Roll melodies such as those of Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley. If you’re into gospel, blues, or learning about the development of rock, Sister Tharpe’s songs are a perfect point to get into.

Sister Tharpe, a queer, American black woman, was an incredible historical figure who pioneered an equally incredible way of playing the electric guitar. Her songs blended urban and rural tunes with a unique picking method and religious lyrics, creating a distinctive style that’s immediately recognisable. Other songs of hers that I absolutely love are ‘Rock Me’ and ‘Up Above My Head (I Hear Music In The Air)’. I personally think the best time to play these songs is out loud when sitting on the roof or front step at night.

A cool EP that takes on a proto-rock form, albeit one twisted by strong psychedelic flavours, Lost in Light is hypnotic.
