001. With their shared understanding ofwhat it’s like to be disgraced career wise and academically, comes an unspokenagreement to just be there for the other. If the past comes back to hauntthem ( as it’s liable to do in theirline of work ) or theother is having a particularly difficult day, they can almost always befound on the roof of the firehouse. The other knows to simply join them, doesn’t have to speak, and offers a drink. It’s a presence thing. Both womenare fuck all good at verbalizing their emotions so it’s just nice, sometimes,to have someone there that doesn’t need you to talk. 002. Horrormovie marathons in the firehouse are a regular event ( fortnightly,if they can swing it, monthly if they can’t ) andHoltz religiously ropes Erin into shenanigans to scare Patty, Abby, and Kev.Without fail, Erin will object initially, but really get into it as the prankgoes on. Their record is 14 movie nights in a row of successfully scaring theothers. This was only broken by the fact that they startled Patty so badly onenight that she punched Holtz in the face and the marathons were boycotted for amonth. 003. Erin, more than once, has come into work to find Holtz asleep under her desk. Why the engineer would notjust sleep beneath ( oreven at, like a regular person ) herown desk truly baffles her. But when asked Holtz said it was because it smeltlike home, and she liked talking to Erin’s plants in like counting sheep. Hermind isn’t so cluttered in Erin’s office. She can breathe. 004. Holtzand Erin don’t have a secret handshake, they have a full on code. How it’s developed, they’re not sosure, but one day it didn’t exist and the next it did. It’s like the movies, when they army dudes are waving their hands about and pointing and makingfists. It’s unexplainable (as anything with Holtz’s involvement usually is ) andthey’ve certainly tried to do so, but Patty and Abby have given up trying tounderstand. As long as when they split up, Erin is on one team and Holtz on theother, so they can communicate silently, the ‘busters are all set.
