unsent letters
John,
Either you read this as soon as you found it, or you saved it to open in a bad moment. I hope it’s the latter, but I also wish you never needed to open it. Catch 22, I suppose.
I think about our days in the marines sometimes and I can’t believe we got away with what we got away with for as long as we did. And I also can’t believe I never told you I knew the truth. I wonder every day if you ever knew about me. There we were, you finding the injured and me healing their wounds until they weren’t mortal wounds anymore; how often were you surprised at how mild those injuries were? Did you just think we were getting lucky, or that your ability to track got us there in time?
This isn’t a friendly world, for us. It’s hard and ugly, and people want to hurt us. People want us dead because of a gene. Because they want to think we’re all dangerous. But you and I, we know what we did, and how many people we saved over there. Whatever the fuck has gone wrong enough for you to open this letter, I don’t want you to forget that.
I told you once about a small town where my dad used to take me every summer for a couple of weeks. The post office there holds a box for me. Box 42. If you get a note there, I’ll come to you, if you need me. I’ve been staying hidden for a long fucking time, John, but I’m here for you if you need me.
In your debtRic.
the last safe house was gone, along with most of those taking refuge there. captured, killed, or just in the wind -- only a handful of them had managed to make it to this new place. if not for the sentinel services tripping the alarm, they never would have been able to send out the s.o.s. for help in time. joey would have been taken to one of those facilities the adults were always talking about. over his dead body would he let them take him. this new place was a lot like their old one. big, rundown, falling apart. but with people milling around it made the building feel ... warmer.
spotting one of the ones who’d come to their aid while under attack, joey weighed his options. stay out of the way ( like most told him to ), or go and thank the guy for no doubt saving his ass. well, he never had been very good at doing what he was told. collapsing into the ratty armchair across from the guy, the exhaustion of the day catching up with him as he sat, the ten-year-old ( almost eleven if anyone asked ) managed a weak smile. ❛ i wanted to say thank you. it was cool, you guys coming to help. you didn’t have to, but you did. ❜ | @proudstcr

Seething didn’t really cover the anger roiling in Clarice’s gut. To be betrayed you had to trust first, and Clarice didn’t, she never did---except a little, maybe, with the Underground. With John. And look where that had gotten her.
Maybe he didn’t know. Maybe he’d had nothing to do with Sonia’s actions---but how could he not know? Sonia was the one he loved. The two of them were tangled in each other; Clarice had felt that. She still felt it, in the hollows of her bones, so deep in her that even if Sonia said she could get it out, Clarice didn’t believe it.
She cornered him the first chance she got.
“Tell me that you didn’t know.”

The young man’s face is all red. “I’m sorry,” he mutters, head lowest he can manage but it doesn’t make his towering height any smaller. “I haven’t eaten all day and it’s killing me.” The way his stomach aches is not the worst part. The worst is how his hunger feeds his anxiety and their stressful situation isn’t helping, to say the least.
Still, they don’t have food right now and they are not regular citizens who can simply hit a gas station and grab some candy fix. “I’ll be okay, though. I’ll be okay.”
013.
Flinching at the sudden arrival of John, she sprang to her feet instinctively, prepared to run but when she saw food she felt her stomach make the very firm discussion to sit back down. It’d been a little over a day since she ate, though that was nothing compared to the others. Ed decided she’d have to find a way to use her parents money to buy them all food. After all, it was more than Eddie would ever need or truly use. “T-Thank you. Y-You really didn’t have to get me anything, I-I’m fine.”
👫 /gimme dat john and ed greatness
1. Eddie and John’s powers have meshed in a manner that the two always know where the other is. Like setting a return destination on your GPS, the two are constantly aware of where the other is no matter the distance between the two of them. Ed finds comfort in it, knowing that no matter what, one thing is constant.
2. After arriving, Ed tended to stick close to John. Like a puppy finding the first person to be kind to it, Eddie stuck pretty close. To this day, Eddie is still rather close and constantly hides behind him if she is ever feeling threatened or worried. She’ll poke her head around or over his shoulder.
3. John is the only person who has been able to calm Eddie. He is the only one who can touch her and be close when she is losing control. He is also the only one Eddie will permit to touch her under any circumstance. Ed instinctively flinches and shrinks from any and everyone who attempts to touch her, unless it is John. If it’s John, she is perfectly calm. When her power gets to be too much or her panic attack sends her into losing control, Jon is the only one who has been able to sooth her. Marco has pulled it off, but John is the fastest and safest way to calm her.
4. Eddie has feelings for John, but after seeing how Clarice was handled, she quickly determined it was best to simply remain silent. She decided it was better than to risk making him uncomfortable and losing her only friend.
