But this was undoubtedly the key factor that led to Gustavo Fring's demise, and the primary thing Walter White was counting on. Despite more or less acknowledging this on some level, Gus & Walt are more alike than either of them really knows, and the core of that is rooted in something that Breaking Bad argues is fundamental to mankind, and cycles of power, and rises, and falls. Gustavo Fring is just different in his menace, his authority, his absurdly threatening aura & genius intellect & planning. And this continues to be a factor even down to the matter-of-fact tie adjustment just a second prior to his death. But the way he met his end was rooted in something so base & applicable to all of humanity, and it is incredibly telling that even someone who seemed to be positioned so high above everyone was not able to escape the shackles of pride. The cultural context of the ancient Near East often associated a fall with divine judgment, reinforcing the idea that GOD opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, as stated in James 4:6. This phrase serves as a caution against self-reliance and arrogance, urging believers to adopt humility, a key characteristic of Jesus Christ, who humbled Himself even to the point of death on a cross (Philippians 2:8).

Pride is often depicted in the Bible as a dangerous and destructive force. In the context of ancient Israel, pride was seen as a direct challenge to GOD's authority and sovereignty. The Hebrew word for pride here can also imply arrogance or self-exaltation. This phrase warns that pride leads to downfall, a theme echoed throughout Scripture. In Isaiah 14:12-15, the fall of Lucifer is attributed to his pride. Similarly, King Nebuchadnezzar's pride led to his temporary downfall in Daniel 4. Pride is a sin that blinds individuals to their need for GOD, often resulting in their ruin.

Pride blinds individuals to their weaknesses and creates a false sense of security.

Matthew 23:12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled

This phrase underscores the danger of following leaders who lack true spiritual vision. In the cultural context of the time, guides were essential for safe travel, especially in unfamiliar or treacherous terrain. The imagery of a blind man leading another blind man highlights the futility and risk of such a situation. It serves as a warning to the followers of the Pharisees, urging them to seek leaders who have genuine insight & understanding of GOD's will.

First, JESUS established their hypocrisy—they regularly broke the laws of GOD while demanding others follow man-made traditions. They displayed outward piety but lacked true devotion to GOD & HIS Word in their hearts. They were rebellious toward GOD and blind to their spiritual emptiness.

What makes a person unclean, JESUS taught, originates from inside the individual: “What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, is what defiles them” v.11

If the blind lead the blind, those leaders are arrogant, overconfident, and in serious denial about their own sightless condition.

It seems apparent that all three men in the oval office the other day fell prey to this.

Making peace requires a discipline of humility, an ability to choose to soften the hardened heart and set aside grievances in the interest of building a way forward.

Probably the most counterintuitive aspect of this is setting aside who was "right" in the situation or "justified" in their offense. I struggle with this daily at home and at work. It is pride that must be stifled to make this work and that is a very hard thing to do sometimes.

Pride Goeth Before the Fall!

Me: So does Modesty. So does Virtue -- and Wickedness, and Greed, and Generosity, and Grief, and Joy, and Forgiveness, and Rage. Everything goeth before a fall. Falls will happen, period. Because Gravity is universal, and mistakes will be made, even with the most meticulous planning, and good intentions. Me (after a breath): We just remember our falls in the wake of Pride, because that's when they take us off guard.
