tips for being a better dancer. wanting to march phantom 2015 babes
woah, what a coincidence, I want you to march phantom 2015 too :)
make a commitment every day to doing something for your dancing, whether it’s stretching, strengthening your core/hip rotators, or watching dance videos and mimicking the qualities they do that you enjoy watching. you can also find a fair amount of ballet and modern technique tutorial on youtube to help get you moving in the right ways.
the only sure-fire way to get good at dance quickly is to take classes that meet multiple times a week from the same instructor. my university offers some technique classes through our theatre dept., and that’s how I got a lot better outside of marching wgi and dci.
watch yourself in the mirror often, take videos of yourself and look for the things you like and do those more. I think the biggest qualities that are sought after at pr are fluidity, nuance, and breath. learn what looks and feels good to you, and do those often.
Are there more than two phantomettes on tumblr? (past or present)

who were the colorguard age outs this year (or last...? 2013)
Yikes, there were a lot!Ashley, Heidi, Kayla, Molly, Lacey, Rose, Sarah, Sam, Jen, Taylor, Kendall, and Shannon. I think that’s it..
Is it really hard to make it into the phantom guard? I'd love to march there someday.
Well… there are a lot of people that go into the audition process, and only 36 marchers and 4 alternates that come out of it. So technically, yes, it is pretty difficult. But if you are a passionate, talented individual, and you really look great during your audition and show the staff how dedicated you are, they will have a very hard time saying no. :)
Any advice on someone who wants to join phantom's guard next year? I'm marching with open class this summer but worried I won't be good enough (I've only done two seasons of guard)
Yeah, absolutely!Make sure you soak up any and all of the information that you receive from your staff this summer. Your best bet for making Phantom is not just the amount of experience you have, but the skill that you gain from it.Take as many dance classes as you possibly can. Every show that we do is heavily dance-based, that's just the style of our color guard.Reflect on the reasons for why you want to join the Phantom Regiment, and allow those to be your motivation. A major part of the audition process is the staff getting to know your personality, and if they see you are very passionate about joining the corps and performing in general, they will be more inclined to love you. :)Hope this helps!
What are auditions like at PR for guard?
PR auditions are as follows:Friday night, everyone arrives and gets checked in, and gets a number. Then we have dance class, which is comprised of several center exercises to warm up, and a few across-the-floors, all of which they explain pretty thoroughly. Afterward, we start learning a dance combination that will be a part of the smaller group audition. Then, we perform the dance piece in slightly smaller groups, and finish up for the night. Saturday begins with more dance class basics in the morning, typically from one of the other dance techs on the staff. Then, we continue reviewing the dance that was taught the night before. After that, everyone transitions to flag, and we learn a few basic tosses and tricks before jumping into learning the choreography that will be the flag portion of the audition. After that is lunch. After lunch, we finish learning the flag piece and then those who want to demonstrate their skills on weapon go do rifle and saber technique block. Both the november camps I have been to I went to go spin weapon, but if you choose to stay on flag, you will review the choreography more in-depth with the flagline staff. This is really helpful if you have never spun weapon before or if you are uncomfortable with anything in the piece! In the evening, we come back after dinner and review the choreography a little bit, and then are divided up into small groups of 6 or 7 people, with one veteran guard member in every group (so someone experienced is there to ease your nerves!!). Everyone is sent out in the hall, and the small groups go in to perform all of the choreography (dance and flag) in front of the staff. After they have gone through all of the groups, they may call people back in to get another look at them.Sunday morning is the funnest day of all. We do a third dance class, which is any style of the staff’s choosing. November of my rookie season, we learned a little hip hop routine. In April we did a broadway/jazzy style piece. This past November camp we learned a ballet adagio combination in keeping with this summer’s theme of Swan Lake (swake). After that, we review the audition combinations, and perform in medium-sized groups in front of everyone as well as the staff for last looks. This is very fun, because you get to have all of your new friends cheer you on. :)After that, they take all of the people who will receive 1’s (contracts) and 2’s (call-backs to april camp) into another room and congratulate them. Everyone receives their feedback sheet that the staff took notes on, and after all of the wrap-up announcements you get the chance to talk to the staff individually about what you should work on, regardless of what number you received. (1, 2, or 3).The best advice I could offer to someone auditioning would be to keep an open mind, have fun, and make friends! Some of the people I met auditioning for PR have remained very dear friends to me, even though they found a home elsewhere.Hope this helps! ♡
