I thought I would write about my experience at the PR Show yesterday. It was like nothing I have ever been to before, and the whole experience was incredibly interesting.
Meeting people from firms that provide services to PR firms meant that I learnt about the elements of public relations that are external to the agency; there were companies that analyse an organisation's social media and its engagement successes, companies that compile news articles tailored to a particular organisation, and companies that create branded products for organisations to pass out.
The most incredible thing that happened all day was the use of the hashtag #Ideservebetter by Mynewsdesk. They were introducing people to the hashtag, and encouraging them to ask for something that would make their day better. I thought I had nothing to lose by asking for a cup of tea - 15 minutes later they told me to go to the stand and pick it up via a Vine video of two people in red morphsuits! It was just such a brilliant example of how social media creates relationships. Whilst I was at their stand, I learnt about their company and what they do. It was something that I wish I had come up with myself. It was funny yet effective, and brought me to them rather than just pushing information at me that I had no desire to hear about. I was captivated from the start. It was, quite frankly, brilliant.
As regards my future career in PR, speaking to people from Ketchum and the recruitment agency F1 led me to the conclusion that technology PR might be a good avenue to pursue. Having done Law at Cambridge, I am not nervous about being confronted by vast amounts of information and sifting through it to pick out the most interesting and relevant points. I can write copious amounts of prose, and I am actually interested in learning about new things, and trying to understand them. Finally, I'm secretly quite good with technology. It's something that I find quite logical and easy to understand, and, with a little help from Google, I find that I can fix most technological issues I come across. Obviously I will have to look into it more, but I am being drawn to this aspect of PR.
I really enjoyed the show, and am so glad I went. I learnt so much more about PR than I was expecting, not just about the industry itself, but also about the services available to PR practitioners and just how incredibly useful they are. It made me want to work in the industry more than ever; it is interesting, creative, strategic, and fun. Hopefully I'll be back there in a few years with my firm!
