So, how the idea of creating Grup came up? I mean, he used to be a big and introvert dragon (Prug) and now he's a little and friendly dragon.
I know there’s a primordial version of Grup I drew sitting in a pile of papers drawn in the 90s somewhere in my parents’ house. I drew him as I vaguely remembered him for the end of “To Boulderly Go”. I had to make him exist as one drawing and our existing mouth pack because our team for the 3 minute shorts was very small and I couldn’t keep adding characters that had to be fully designed willy-nilly without restriction. As the 3 minute episodes went on, he shrunk out of my own absentmindedness. As I went on to storyboard the pilot (much of which has been used in chunks in “Working Grup” and “Cave of Gelatinous Doom”) Grup’s voice and personality started to organically change. By the time we got to “The Desolation of Grup”, his personality had developed quite a bit, and we’d already decided that the “One Drawing Dragon” was probably a different guy. It’s kind of like when you see old Warner cartoons that start rabbits that aren’t quite Bugs Bunny yet or with Egghead, the precursor to Elmer Fudd.
