Bean Counter Episode 2 Review - Overworking Is The Issue
Oh ho ho, this episode is quite spicy without showing off the spice too much. By the way, it was like this in the manga, so there isn’t any censorship. And like…why are people mad about the BL scenes? THIS IS A BL!
But yeah, this is where Sei and Aresh finally form a connection with each other, but it’s definitely going to be slow burn as Sei is in love with working more than he loves anyone. The fact that he’s not turned off by having intercourse with a man and is even considering doing it again if it means he can feel better and do more work does make me wonder about his previous love life…if he had any. I think the only issue I have with Bean Counter as a whole, from what I’ve read, is that Sei’s entire personality is just wanting to work and there’s really no additional background about him. Why is he so hyper fixated with work? What is his family life like? Has he had a lover before? Does he have any hobbies? I get that his entire personality is being a hollow shell who will slowly develop feelings for others, but the lack of self love intrigues me a lot, yet it’s never explained other than being a product of Japanese toxic work culture. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Regardless, I do like how each of their personalities are shown in this episode. Aresh is stern, but he’s a very caring person underneath his iciness. He doesn’t have to be concerned and care for Sei, yet he does. He’s unconsciously drawn to him and it’s rather cute to see. It’s always funny to see other characters be exasperated as Aresh’s caring side. Sei is hardworking, but to a fault.
A new character is introduced, Ciro Quellbus. He’s the royal doctor. He’s the one who has to tell Seiichiro that he’s malnourished and even forbids him from taking the tonics as he tells him that he doesn’t have any magic resistance. I do like that he’s shown to be a capable doctor as I’m so used to seeing doctors in anime who are incompetent. I also found it hilarious how he was gushing over Sei and Aresh holding hands. Sir, are you fudanshing out?
While the animation quality is not that great at times, I do like the voice acting. One thing that the anime triumphs over the the manga is having the magic incantations be voiced out. It gives a sense of mysticism that shows off that yes, this is a fantasy world. I also like how the voice actors say these chants—it reminds me of fantasy language in video games like Legend of Zelda. I also like Maeno’s performance as Aresh in this episode. The way he vocalizes all the outbursts is great—I feel like that’s his forte in a way.
Fun voice actor trivia, Quellbus’s voice actor Win Morisaki is also the singer of the ending song. He’s also Burmese and used to be a J-pop idol. Right now, he’s mainly an actor, voice actor and a singer. Some of his roles includes playing Ryo in the live action adaptation of Ya Boy Kongming and voicing Anglade in the Children of the Sea movie. Norbert is voiced by Seiichiro Yamashita who voiced Toru in Horimiya and Ace in Twisted Wonderland. Helmut is voiced by Takuma Suzuki who voiced Uda in Parasyte and Lord Braska in Final Fantasy X.
So yeah, this story is mainly about the isekai-ed office worker obsessed with overworking and how he gets a knight boyfriend who pampers him. If that’s your cup of tea, keep sticking around! Let me know your thoughts on this episode!
