Stranger Things – Season 2: “Chapter One – MADMAX” Netflix's Stranger Things Season 2: "Chapter One - MADMAX" Directed & Written by The Duffer Brothers…
Science behind the Captors, psiioniics, mind honey?
Psionic powers are just defined as the ability to connect with matter using your mind. Telepathy and Telekinesis being the most common. Technically Aradia, Tavros and Vriska are all psionics, but not nearly as powerful as Sol. Sollux is introduced as being a "high level psionic", so they have a scale for this shit. And I'm guessing "high level" is Sollux speak for "literally the very best". So I was thinking about how the hell Sollux actually sees, given that he doesn't actually have anything consituting eyes. No pupil, no iris, no sclera, and I'm guessing no cone cells or optic nerve. Now, the bit of the brain responsible for translating electrical signals from the optic nerve is at the back of the head, so it's perfectly believeable that Eridan knocking him into a wall blinded him. But consider that his eyes didn't just stop working, they went dark, like you'd pulled the plug on them. My theory is that this is pretty much what happened. All of this comes back to electrical signals in the brain. Sollux's eyes aren't eyes at all, more like electrical terminals. The only way I can think that he sees, is essentially psionic echolocation. His eyes are emitting a constant frequency, which is recieved and translated into what's around him. (I'm assuming the fact that he has a red eye and a blue eye somehow helps with colour because otherwise we have monochromatic Sol and that is just the pinnacle of irony right there. And he can see his computer screen so evidently light waves are also translated). In fact, all psionic abilities work in a very similar way, going back to that thought of electrical impulses. It's almost like brain radio. So Sollux and Aradia are on a frequency of voices of the doomed (probably due to a change in brain chemistry of said doomed), Tav is on a wavelength of animals, Vriska is on a wavelength of trolls of a certain blood colour and down. With all of them but Sollux, they're more attuned to it, and can change the pulses they're submitting to give commands and suggestions, while Sollux can't do that because he keeps trying to drown it out so he never learned. On the other hand, Sollux and Aradia have telekinetic abilities. This can be down to electricity as well, as they can control what they're putting out, so can interact on a cellular level with objects, being able to move and reform them at will. It would also explain why lowbloods are more prone to psychic abilities, to do this, your brain chemistry has to allow for huge electrical charges, way more than the human brain can tolerate. And Sollux, being a high level? His electrical capacity has to be off the charts. Do you know how high a voltage you need to make a static charge travel through air? Phenomenally huge. And Sollux can control it to the extent of using it as a weapon. It also explains what mind honey does, it increases the voltage in the brain. So when Sollux drank it, he couldn't keep all that electricity in his head, it had to go somewhere. It did what electricity does. (Although I'm guessing he wouldn't have been able to control it at the time, so the beams wouldn't have been straight up, it would follow the same discharge pattern as lightning). And this all loops back to Sollux being blinded. He hits his head, part of the circuit is damaged. Boom, instant short circuit. Everything connected to his optic recievers goes out. And that includes his ability to sense other minds. Bye bye voices of the doomed! But his telekinetic abilities were connected in parallel. They would have remained functional, connected to more crucial parts of his brain. Until he moves the meteor. Massive electrical charges through his brain. More than he was ever supposed to handle for that extent. The 'wiring' in his brain starts to essentially set itself on fire from the inside out. Massive amounts of damage, huge internal resistance. Now that killed Sollux. But Mituna, he must have stopped before that happened. And he's left with a brain that's partially beyond repair, and partially with a huge internal resistance. Like when you've had a laptop too long and the battery will only last a few minutes outside the charger. Mituna essentially lives off mind honey, a high voltage is the only way to combat a huge internal resistance. So though mind honey won't fix him, he'll be closer to sane for as long as the effects last.
