do you think jk rowling purposely kept hermione's skin tone ambiguous so the kids reading the books can relate to her/want to be like her?? cause i remember in an interview jk rowling said she wanted kids to have a rolemodel like hermione (smart, brave) and be hermione, rather than someone like pansy (rude, full of themselves).
I think that’s entirely possible! It’s hard to say what JK really intended (if it was something that slipped her mind or something intentional) but either way it did help make Hermione that kind of role model (mind you, Hermione hasn’t always been perfect). To be able to connect with her and imagine her as looking like you, or me, or her is really wonderful and amazing.
I will say, considering JK’s treatment of other minorities, Cho Chang’s name for one thing, and the Ilvermorny houses, it’s hard to guess what was going through her mind with Hermione’s ambiguous race/skin color, but I do believe she probably, at least in her own mind, imagined Hermione white, if for no reason other than that relatability to herself. After all, she’s white, so it’s not difficult and doesn’t require research to write from her own perspective... but that’s just my take!
