I’m in a medvet ento class atm and looking at all those mosquitos under the scope is giving me a newfound appreciation for how pretty they can be! So since mosquitos get a lot of hate, I wanna spread some mosquito love. Do you have a favorite mosquito?
well I mean the go-to answer has to be Toxorhynchites, both because they're so impressively large and cool looking and also because they're predators of blood-feeding mosquitos, but honestly I have a pretty soft spot for Psorophora, especially P. ciliata and their big goofy legwarmers.
you can definitely find better photos of them elsewhere but this is my only pic i took of one, back when i was working on a mosquito repellent testing project in louisiana and had to count and ID like a hundred thousand mosquitoes from our traps
This morning I had my qualifying exam, passed, and became a #PhD candidate. I’d like to extend my thanks to the often-maligned species that I study - the #mosquitoes. (They’re not all bad!) We have about 80 #species in a dozen genera in #Florida - here are six species, each in a different genus (top left, #Psorophora ciliata; middle left, #Coquillettidia perturbans; bottom left, #Wyeomyia smithii; top right, #Aedes albopictus, one of the vectors of #Zika #virus; middle right, #Culex erraticus; bottom right, #Culiseta melanura.) #entomology #bugs #mosquito #culicidae #gainesville #meetyourneighbours #macro #macrophotography #insect : @biodiversilary
