The mixture
I grew up in Minnesota, and the community I grew up in there was very white and there was one black family. I grew up in a small town and a rural community. And that one of the things that I really like about Philadelphia, is the mixture of people and cultures and information. When I was growing up, I was kind of a tomboy, so I was always hanging out with the jocks and my brother was closest to me in age so we hung out a lot and did sports and things cause there wasn’t anybody else to play with.
And I kind of have lived my life in that way, like always feeling like belonged, and I think that more recently I’ve realized that that was white privilege. And that that is like I can go anywhere and do whatever I want to, for the most part and be accepted. My mother and my sister and grandmothers were all very strong women and so I always felt like I had a place at the table. At work, ya know, I had my fair share of sexual harassment, but it like a given, like a give as much as you get type of thing. It didn’t make me feel necessarily uncomfortable or disempowered but I can certainly see how that could happen.
And since the election, just the images, I saw this morning that Der Spiegel in Germany, the cover had Trump holding lady liberty’s head, severed and I big dagger in the other hand and I thought that that was particularly shocking, ya know. The violence against women, ya know, that I think is underscored in that, and also the new thing like “dress like a woman.” What does that mean? And I think it’s great that people have come out in their astronaut suits and in their doctor uniforms and things like that to show that women dress in many different ways, ah, not just in high heels and skirts. So, thank you for letting me share.
