“I’m so doing it,” Shawn repeats before vaulting over the back of the row of seats in front of them and jogging to the football field.
Unaware of the fellow teen holding back, his feet pump on. Hazel eyes flick around the scene, taking in everything from the football player waterfalling gatorade on the sidelines to the food truck just pulling in the parking lot (half an half early for the game) to the squadron of cheerleaders congregated on the track.
Foot slapped squarely on a chair, Shawn careens over the next line of seats.
The cheerleaders.
Normally yes, Shawn would take interest in getting the head cheerleader’s – or any other cheerleader’s – number and hand for the Homecoming dance looming in T-minus five hours (as always, leaving things to the last moment). But today. Today, the new girl just signed on to the team– well, actually, two days ago she signed up, and today was her first practice– No, he hasn’t been stalking her; he’s just really observant.
So, anyway, now was his chance. Now was his one and only moment, taking everything down to the wire, to impress her so much, that Juliet O’Hara – transfer all the way from Miami, Florida – will agree to be taken to the Homecoming dance.
High School AU ◊ Shules' Lovers' Valentine's Challenge!
Lassiter knit his brows as the phone rang and rang. Y/N never missed a call from him; she knew how much it worried him. Swallowing hard, he hung up and called again. His hand started to tap against his desk.
Juliet looked up from her desk to see his growing concern. She watched as two others walked up to her. Shawn craned his neck to see Carlton getting even more antsy. Focusing, he saw he was using his own cellphone, his jaw was clenched, and his eyebrows were furrowed.
Before any of the three could say anything, Lassiter shot up and threw his phone on his desk. Juliet quickly hurried over. Shawn and Gus followed at a slightly farther distance.
“Carlton, what’s wrong?” the blonde cooed.
“It’s Y/N, she isn’t answering her phone,” he whispered before yelling, “She always answers.”
“Maybe it died,” Juliet offered, half-heartedly.
Juliet pulled her partner into a hug, trying to calm him down. Shawn and Gus shared a worried glance. The faux psychic cocked his head to the side when he saw Lassiter’s cop phone with a red light. A sickening feeling ravaged his stomach.
“Carlton,” he whispered.
“What?” he lowly snapped.
“Your desk phone.”
The detective shot his head to the object. The glowing red dot seemed strangely ominous rather than settling. Lassiter quickly punched in his voicemail code and put it on speaker.
“...Carlton?” Y/N whispered through a grainy signal.
The breath left the detective’s lungs. “Oh my god.”
An automated voice was next. “Detective Lassiter. I told you when you arrested me that I’d get you back. Welcome to revenge.”
The receiver clicked, signaling the end of the message. No one spoke.
Lassiter broke through the door, Juliet behind him. She scanned the room as Carlton ran toward the cage in the center of the room. His eyes started to tear up, but he pushed them back. He could tell Y/N was hurt. He needed to know if she was conscious.
“Y/N,” he called as he squatted near her head, “Y/N, talk to me.”
“Car-Carlton?” she rasped.
He smirked. “Long story. I’m going to get you out. You just have to stay awake.”
Lassiter heard her grumbling as he moved over to the lock. He paused as gunshots went off. He glanced up to see O’Hara had shot the perp. Unfortunately, in Lassiter’s mind, he was still alive. The detective returned to his girlfriend.
“I’m almost there,” he whispered to her, breaking the lock.
He pulled the cage door open and walked into the slightly too small structure. He knelt by her and held her face in his hand. A tear slipped from his eye as she smiled at him.
“I...I knew you’d come.”
He kissed her forehead. “Of course. I love you so much, Y/N.”
With that, he picked her up and carried her from her cage. She clutched onto him as much as she could. As he made his way toward the ambulance, he paused by Shawn and Gus. Tears still clearly there, he nodded at the pair.
“I...Thank you.”
Shawn and Gus humbly nodded their response.
Carlton held Y/N closer as he stepped into the ambulance. He had her back; that’s all that mattered.
I’m getting through these! Just very, very slowly - welp. This can take place S8 or beyond (but before the first movie). I’ve just been picturing it right after the finale a couple days after the move up to San Fran, based on the psych discord’s headcanon that Jules had been staying at Karen’s place for a bit while trying to find her own place and Shules stayed a couple days before they decided that ‘yeah we need our own place now’.
Also, first bit of Psych writing in a while. Enjoy! :)

“You love me, right?”
Coming back from the bathroom shouldn’t have taken so long, but here Juliet stood, feeling like she had just awoken from a centuries long nap as she stared at one Shawn Spencer. He sported a very conflicted expression while loosely gesturing with a wooden spoon in hand. Her own expression couldn’t have been any less muddled as blue eyes tried to calculate just what her boyfriend was implying by that.
“What?” she said, scrunched brows and all.
That probably didn’t help matters.
“This,” he gestured the spoon between the two of them, “doesn’t depend on the taste of these cookies,” he clarified. On ‘these cookies’ he pointed the very spoon at the mixing bowl. “You’re not like super passionate about cooking or anything, I hope?”
“Shawn, what did you do?” Her eyes flicked from the bowl to the empty can right next to it and then the untouched bag of sugar in the background. Her mind put the pieces together. Exasperated amusement touched her voice: “Oh, no…”
“Yeahhhh.” All the air fled out of his chest, but not in a defeated way; it perpetuated more relief than anything else. He brought a hand up to the back of his neck, rubbed briefly, then dropped his arm to his side and shifted closer. “So, how do you feel about sugar-free cookies, Jules?”
“How does someone mix up baking soda with sugar?” Juliet returns easily, but her words are too addled by laughter to hold much scolding effect. If at all. Criticism wasn’t really her intention, anyway.
“They’re both white and powdery!”
“Oh-kay, that makes sense,” she said sarcastically with a loving eye roll.
“Hey, I made a mistake! I’m allowed this, aren’t I?”
“You’re allowed this.” She lifted herself on her tiptoes to plant a quick kiss on his lips before turning to the bowl and lacing her two hands on its rim. “But we’re going to have to start this from scratch again.”
“Shawn, I don’t feel so good,” you had to place your glass down. It had come on suddenly but it was real. Something was wrong. You were helping Shawn and Gus with their latest case and were attending a party with them.
You had only put your glass down for a minute, under Shawn’s watch so you could answer a phone call. When you got back and took a sip however, it tasted slightly different.
Now you were clutching your stomach, sliding to the ground.
“What? What’s wrong?” Shawn helped lower you to the ground safely.
“My drink. Something is wrong.”
“Call an ambulance!” Shawn leaned over you, “hey, hey, hey. Focus on me. Don’t go into the light now. You can’t leave me!”
Gus came back into your sight with his phone in his hand. It was getting harder to focus.
In fact the last thing you saw was Shawn calling out your name.
“Did you decorate the tree without me? I can't believe this!”
You and Gus shared a look of exasperation. The two of you had been working, loudly, on decorating the Psych office for Christmas. You had saved doing the Christmas tree for last, giving Shawn the chance to wake up and join you. However, it was only when the scent of jerk chicken wafted through the office that Shawn popped up from his nap in the hammock.
It was two hours after the decorating was done.
Lights twinkle from their spot hanging from the ceiling, the front window had been lined in garland and ornaments, and in the point of pride stood a fake palm tree lined in pineapple shaped lights. Gus had even brought out some stockings and left a few wrapped presents under the tree.
“We tried to wake you,” you shrugged your shoulders and slapped Shawn’s hand away from your food. “Don’t even think about it. Jerk chicken is for helpers not sleepers.”
“Ahh come on guys! I totally helped,” Shawn picked up an ornament that must have been accidentally left out and placed it in the front window. “See? Totally helped.”
“Not a chance,” Gus moved away from Shawn, “and that’s not helping.”
For anon...reader is Shawn’s ‘psychic’ sister as requested. Enjoy! (Y/N/N means your nickname)
Y/N giggled to herself as she saw Shawn starting one of his ‘predictions’. She quickly regained her composure as she focused on what he was saying. After a few moments or so, Shawn glanced her way, signaling for her bit. Just as easily, Y/N went about ‘predicting’ where the suspect may be staying, though a little less dramatic.
Soon, she, Shawn, and Gus hurried to Gus’s car while Lassie and Juliet went to Lassiter’s car. The detective frowned a moment when she saw Y/N chuckling while getting into the car. She playfully punched Shawn from the backseat. Juliet arched a brow at him.
“Lassiter.”
He snapped out of it. “Right. Sorry.”
The blonde held a look of confusion. He was never this quiet after one of Shawn’s predictions. He’d usually complain about his ‘childish’ behavior and ‘couldn’t he just say it and leave?’. She shrugged it off.
Y/N raised her hands toward both Shawn and Gus. The pair gleefully high fived. She smirked at the pair.
“Another case well done,” she commented, “And with some fantastic visions.”
“More like fantastically over the top,” Gus teased.
“I admit I could’ve gone without tossing the pineapple yogurt at the guy, but he still stopped.”
Gus’s phone rang causing the three to glance between the other. The pharmaceutical salesman excused himself when he realized it was his boss. Shawn and Y/N shared smirks.
“Seriously though, that was amazing,” Shawn praised.
Y/N chuckled. “We did good.”
Her brother chuckled. “Yeah, we did Y/N/N...You should stay.”
“Yeah?”
“Dad would love to have you back,” he added, “And you’ve already been here a whole month. It’d be weird if you were gone.”
Y/N smirked knowing her brother sucked at saying he missed her. She glanced over her shoulder at the increasingly familiar police station. Her eyes fell on Carlton Lassiter, a detective that had caught her interest in a month. He caught her gaze, allowing the two to share a smile. She turned back to Shawn.
“Sounds like a plan.”
Shawn’s head shot up. “Yeah?”
She nodded. “Yeah.”
He shot up from the seat he had been sitting in. “Awesome! First order of business is celebrating. Jerk chicken? No, that’s more like dinner. We could get drinks at that dive bar...but what if we get hungry?”
Y/N stood before resting her hands on his shoulders. She was smirking as his attention returned to her.
“Or we could just walk down to the pub where there’s both,” she suggested.
His eyes widened. “That’s brilliant! You’re amazing Y/N/N.”
She chuckled. “I know. You get dad and Gus. I’ll get the others, and we’ll meet you there.”
“So,” Y/N spoke up as she slid next to Lassiter, “I’ve decided to stay in the area.”
Carlton perked up, but didn’t want to seem to enthused. “Yeah? What changed your mind?”
“Well, I miss working with Shawn. He kinda reminds me why I got into it in the first place,” she answered honestly, “Wanna celebrate with us?”
Lassie offered a slightly sad smile. “No, no. I wouldn’t want to get in the way.”
She knit her brows. “But you wouldn’t.”
“No, I would. I see how you’ve been with Spencer. I hate to admit it, but it seems like he makes you happy.”
Y/N’s eyes widened when she realized what he was trying to say. She couldn’t help the laugh that burst from her mouth. The detective gave her a defensive look. After she had calmed down some, she looked back at him.
“Shawn’s my brother, Carlton,” she explained, “We’re siblings.”
His mouth dropped the slightest. “I...I honestly don’t know whether to be relieved or scared.”
She chuckled again. “Both probably...Now would you please celebrate me staying?”
Carlton smirked as he looked into her eyes. “As long as you agree to a date next week?”
She beamed at him before pecking his cheek. “I’d love that.”
He smirked as she intertwined their fingers and pulled him from the station. Juliet and Chief Vic were waiting at the front. Juliet and Y/N shared a knowing look as Y/N held tight to Carlton. This was going to be interesting.
Shawn’s concerned gaze watched Y/N carefully. He had just finished sending a text to Gus, explaining what he had been able to see. The pair was currently locked in the trunk of a car, shot. Shawn had broken his binding before undoing Y/N’s. She had, unfortunately, taken the worse hit of the two. He heard her groan, causing him to sigh in relief.
“Y/N,” he whispered.
“Shhhawn?” she moaned, “What happened?”
He kept his voice light as he explained, “We were both shot, but it’s okay. My dad taught me how to get out of a car.”
“No kidding?” she slurred.
He chuckled. “Yeah. I told you my dad was crazy.”
His observant eyes noticed her one hand moving toward her wound. It was at the height of her hip, but slightly inward. He couldn’t tell if any organs had been hit, but he knew it was worse than his nicked shoulder. He gently slid his hand over to grab her free hand.
“We’re going to get out of this, okay?” he told her, “I promise.”
She gripped his hand. “Together.”
Shawn bared his teeth with a grit as he managed to fling open the trunk door. He gripped the car as best as he could as the driver swerved across the nearly deserted road. Using his legs, he was able to keep Y/N from swerving to much. Shawn let out a huff once the car stopped.
Groaning, he pulled himself up and over the lip of the car. Immediately, he turned back around and gripped his girlfriend by the wrists. He hissed at his shoulder pain.
“This is gonna hurt,” he warned her.
Determined, Y/N rocked her body. The momentum helped Shawn to pull her from the trunk. One hand holding Y/N’s and the other holding his wound, he pulled her toward the forest. Due to the pain, he was huffing more than usual. Y/N was also holding her own wound, attempting to slow the bleeding.
“Okay,” Shawn huffed, “We have to run in zigzags. It’ll throw him off.”
She nodded, huffing as well. “O-Okay. Zigzags. I can do that.”
As Shawn led Y/N through the forest, their kidnapper in tow, his mind recalled what his father had taught them all those years ago. He remembered being dragged to the same area only for his father to chase him. His mind flashed back to the present just as he hopped a trunk. He turned to help Y/N over the same trunk.
He could tell it was getting to her. Y/N was a fighter, but being shot was no walk in the park. He knew he had to find a spot for temporary rest. Shawn continued to lead Y/N in a zigzag pattern, putting more distance between them and the attacker.
Shawn faked one way before pulling him and his girlfriend behind a trunk. She held back a groan as the two shrunk under the shape. Given the low light, it would prove to be a good hiding spot.
Y/N and Shawn held their breath as they heard the mechanic run past them. Once he was gone, they let out a breath. The ‘psychic’ immediately turned to his worse-off girlfriend. He held her close, keeping his voice to a whisper.
“How are you doing? Give me a color,” he instructed.
She smirked, in spite of herself. “Yellow,” she huffed.
Shawn swallowed and nodded. “It’s a good thing we stopped.”
She gripped his hand. She gave him a feeble smile. He fondly smoothed her hair back. He pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. He placed his head on her shoulder and her free hand held his waist. For now, they could rest, however brief it may be.
Y/N groaned as she came to. Her head lulled as she slowly became aware of her surroundings. The first thing she saw was Shawn. She made a groan of protest when she saw a man was holding a gun to his neck. The long haired man chuckled.
“Looks like your friend’s awake,” he teased, pulling the gun back, “Guess that makes two hostages.”
Y/N hazily glowered at the man from her spot in the garage. She wasn’t sure how she ended up here. Her last memory was being behind the tree trunk. When the threatening man had left, Y/N glanced down. It appeared one of them, or maybe even Shawn, had stopped her bleeding. A belt was tightened around her hips with a grease towel in between her wound and the belt.
She listened as she talked with the remaining mechanic; the one who had shot both of them. She could tell he was trying to reason with him. She smirked to herself when she heard Shawn tell him he didn’t kill the two of them because he wasn’t a killer.
Slightly irritated, the man stopped talking to Shawn. Y/N decided she could ask some questions.
“Shawn,” she mumbled.
He craned his neck even though he couldn’t see her. “Y/N, hey. Are you okay?”
“How...How did we get here?”
“Well, I carried you once it was morning to this gas station. Scared me real good,” he teased, deflecting the tension, “Thought you wouldn’t wake up. Anyway, the other guy knocked me out and tied us up. Apparently, Garth here has a partner.”
“Oh,” was all she muttered, “Peachy.”
Y/N turned her head to see the angry mechanic turn toward the door. He grit his teeth as he noticed a few people approaching. Y/N and Shawn shared a look when they realized it was Lassiter and Shawn’s dad.
Unfortunately, the pair had a way to keep you two quiet. Garth pulled out a gun and held it straight at Shawn’s head. He gave the girl a pointed look that told her to keep quiet. She grit her teeth and glared at the man. Hopefully, Shawn’s conversations would get to him soon.
Y/N watched patiently as the ringleader talked to the two outside. Desperately, she wanted to call out to them, to signal to them in some way. But she knew if she did, Shawn would be dead. That was something she couldn’t handle.
“Y/N,” Shawn called out, “Y/N, are you doing okay?”
“Yeah,” she replied softly, “I...I don’t think this belt is working all too well.”
The observant man continued to try and break himself free. He knew Y/N was in a worse condition than he was.
“You just have to hold on a little longer,” he pleaded, “Can you do that for me?”
She nodded. “Yeah. I-I think so.”
Shawn let out a gasp as he cut his hands loose. He glanced across the room, catching sight of his phone buzzing. He watched it fall to the ground. He turned just slightly to see Y/N hunched forward. Her head was still lulling. He grit his teeth before pushing himself down onto the board with wheels.
Hastily, Shawn got to his phone and answered. Unfortunately, it was Gina: the girl he accidentally called the prior night in the trunk.
Before he could get her to call the police, Garth reappeared.
“What do you think you’re doing?” he scolded.
“No, no, no, no, no!” Shawn defended, “It’s not what you think! I wasn’t calling the police or anything like that. Look man, I know this doesn’t end well for me.”
Y/N could hear the pair speaking. Her eyes prickled with tears. How could he be saying this? He promised to get them out.
“I was in the wrong place, wrong time. I’ve made my peace with that.”
“Shawn,” she groaned.
“But recently, I met a girl. Somebody special, just like you did.”
Garth knit his brows. “Just like me?”
“Yeah, I saw her in a vision. She’s beautiful. She’s, uh, she’s got red hair right?”
“Yeah. Most beautiful hair I’d ever seen.”
“My girl’s name is Abigail,” he told him, “What’s yours?”
Garth shot a look to the teary eyed Y/N. She was looking away. He gave a questioning glance to Shawn.
“She’s my sister,” he lied.
“Maureen,” Garth told him, “Her name’s Maureen.”
“Maureen O’Hara.”
He laughed. “Better.”
“Look. I just wanna call and say goodbye. That’s it.”
“Shawn,” Y/N whined, her heart breaking.
Even though she knew Shawn wasn’t actually calling Abigail, it stung to hear him sound so defeated. Eventually, Garth agreed to the call. Each word Shawn was saying, Y/N cried a little more. The emotional pain, along with the physical, was becoming overbearing. Her vision blurred.
She yelped just as Shawn hung up. The angry mechanic had bursted in, gun ready to shoot. The last thing she heard before passing out was a gunshot.
Y/N woke up strapped to a gurney. Her hand grazed her properly bandaged hip. She was still in the dimly lit garage. She saw Lassiter, O’Hara, Gus, and Mr. Spencer nearby. Nerves setting in, she jerked up. Wincing, she hastily looked around the room.
“Shawn, Shawn,” she whimpered.
“Easy there, Y/N,” Henry cooed, “He’s not here. But we’re about to chase down the bastard who has him.”
Slightly dazed, Y/N started unstrapping herself. “I-I’m coming with.”
“Whoa,” Gus exclaimed, catching her, “You’re seriously injured.”
“So is Shawn,” she snapped, eyes tearing up again, “I’ll stay in the back. I just need to make sure he’s alright.”
Juliet shared a look with the other three. Eventually, Lassiter sighed.
“Fine. But you’re staying low.”
Y/N nodded. Gus helped her toward Lassiter’s car. Gently, she laid in the back seat. She closed her eyes, praying that Shawn was still alive.
Despite her pain, Y/N pulled herself out of the car. She limped over to the hood just as Shawn was letting go of his father. Tears were streaming down her face with relief. She coiled her arms around his neck. He sighed into her as he wrapped an arm around her midsection, just barely missing the wound.
“Shawn,” she cried, “You’re okay.”
“I’m so sorry,” he whispered.
She shook her head. “No. It’s not your fault.”
“I love you,” he told her, “I love you so much.”
She tightened the hug. “I love you too.”
The two slowly let go as they watched Lassiter pull out his cuffs. He gave a look of respect toward the younger Spencer.
“Nice shooting, detective,” Lassiter stated.
Shawn raised his head. “Did you just call me...detective?”
Lassi grit his teeth. “No.”
“Shouldn’t we wait for Diesel and Rodriguez before you slap the cuffs on?”
The group of four turned to see Juliet driving Gus’s car slowly. The man had his lips pursed due to the flat tire. Y/N couldn’t help the slight giggle that left her mouth. She buried her head into Shawn’s shoulder. He smirked before kissing her temple.
