TUNES OF 2015. I listened to less SONGS than usual, but when I did this year was about female voices for me. Mostly, actually, for some reason that meant older acts - Grace Jones, Judee Sill, Nina Simone, and above all, Joni - but also Jill Scott, Róisín Murphy, Julia Holter and lots and lots of Eska. I’ve seen and heard Eska perform with lots of other people over the years, but her debut solo album was still a revelation. I had no idea what to expect, especially given Matthew Herbert’s role as producer, but I’m not sure I expected it to be something so perfectly bubbling over with 1970s ambition as it is. As encapsulated in this song, there’s large helpings of Rotary Connection, lots of psyche-folk, bits of funk and reggae, and an enormous streak of Joni - but it’s not pastiche and it’s not even retro once you throw yourself into it, by virtue of the absolute force of voice and personality and songwriting completeness that Eska demonstrates right throughout the record. I’ve listened to it a lot and I still feel like I’m only just skimming the surface - this is without a question an album I’ll be listening to in years to come.
"Sci-fi psyche folk" from Calgary, Canada. VanGaalen is also a comic book maker and animator.
This song about two sad teens has a retro-60's boy-girl folk-psyche feel to it. This is from their album but also came out as a 7" should you be one of them there collector skum.
