‘ I’m not confessing I’m lost, but I might be lost. ‘
These words were spoken to Xavier so easily, from a boy who was exhausted from the endless back-and-forths with family who couldn’t give him a moment’s peace, or faculty who demanded a certain level of perfection, or even from himself, who seemed to be spiralling into the world of text without so much as a breath. Evan knew his friend understood, in a way no one else could, because they shared the same sense of — well, the same SENSE, in a sense, but in their own ways carved out of their own pasts. They had to interpret their visions carefully but sometimes Evan found himself believing they were all truth, and perhaps he could blame that on his upbringing, having been told they were GOD’S MESSAGE told in the ways ‘ only He wants you to see ‘ because ‘ God works in mysterious ways ‘. Yeah, yeah, whatever.
As much as Evan wanted to swipe at this logic, his brain had been molded by those practices, hymns and fables.
The friendship he’d grown with Xavier was fast, easy and safe. At least his friend was no longer being endlessly thrown against walls, as Evan sat on the empty bed in Xavier’s dorm, having given no notice he was inviting himself in ( though wasn’t the first time, so arguably not entirely surprising ). He flopped down, letting his shoulders sink.
‘ Maybe we should try shock therapy and the visions might start making sense. ‘
