Okay, the story is pushing past the Psylocke is a white woman living in the body of a Japanese woman thing. Here, Betsy isn't Brian's biological sister, but I assume that they're still around the same age. Because he describes later growing up not realizing the physical difference between one another.
*Another point. I have reason to suspect that this Brian Braddock is still a member of the Captain Britain Corps. The mention of how absurd his muscles are coupled with him being described by Kitty/*******'s narration as being "Vaguely dangerous" leads me to suspect he's enhanced somehow.
Betsy is from Hanoi, making her Việt.
I think Brian is exaggerating when he says that he "Tried to teach her" because all i'm imagining is tiny baby British boy Brian saying "You've got to keep up appearances. Don't let'em see you croi."
Like you were both kids, she probably wasn't going to be helped by your child notions of stoicism, Brian.
*Betsy's iconic purple hair is dyed. Fun.
**This is an instance where the interviewer is suspicious as all Hell about Psychics manipulating people. Likely because of the fallout of the Xavier school and the rumors about Emma Frost that we will cover later.
*Betsy could only read minds. This is curious given how Xavier will use all of his psychics later.
**There are multiple psi programs in the U.K.
***There's another school. The Fliess Institute. I think that this is a reference to another pseudoscientist. Wilhelm Fliess.

I'm not sure what the nature of the Fliess Institute is, but it's a strange connection.
*Jamie Braddock, Also known now as Monarch dies in a car crash. Betsy, in a rattled state out of a combination of her addiction, her psi abilities, and the trauma of her older brother being critically injured and later dying. Making her ultra vulnerable and probably easily scoped out by Xavier.

I think that Tom wasn't murdered. At least not at first. I think he was taken into the cult, just like Betsy was.
