Ptolemaida is one of the most heavily industrial areas of Greece but this doesn’t mean it can’t be the background for beautiful pictures. Photo by Argiris Karamouzas.  

Random fact: The only time I have been there was for educational purposes. Ptolemaida has two reputations in the rest of Greece: a) that it is a very cold area and b) that it looks like Mordor and slowly kills you. I actually found the place to be pretty charming, despite the occasional Mordor spot. The nearby town is cute too.

Landslide unearths pre-historic tusk in lignite plant in W. Macedonia

A landslide at the Amyntaio lignite coal mine unearthed a 2-meter-long tusk.

The pre-historic finding was discovered by workers of the Greek Public Power Company when they went to inspect the landslide area last week.

They immediately informed their director about the finding and on his part he informed the competent authorities as well as the Paleontology Museum of Prolemaida in West Macedonia.

According to local media kozan, experts form the Museum visited the site the following day and took all necessary measures to transfer the tusk to the Museum.

Engineer Sends Greek Bagel into Space (video)

A Greek engineer made the first known attempt to send a koulouri, the famous Thessaloniki round bread, into space.

Thanasis Foukis attached the koulouri to a hydrogen balloon and released it from the town of Ptolemaida in northern Greece.

The mission was for the balloon and the attached koulouri to reach the stratosphere.

As the balloon disappeared into the sky through the clouds, there was applause from the assembled crowd.
