The Baths of Caracalla by Lawrence Alma-Tadema
Gellért Baths, Budapest, 2024.
This wonder of art nouveau is perhaps the most famous of Budapest’s ornate public baths. On a snowy day with temps in the -10 degree range, the hot baths at 40 degrees sound very appealing. On the other hand when we were in Budapest in September, the air temperature was near 40, so the outdoor wave pool was more attractive.
At The Baths by John Gleich (1879-1927)
Ancient baths.
Billboard on 23rd St. for the city's free public bathhouses, ca. 1935. In addition to tubs and showers, they had toilets, changing rooms, pools, recreational facilities, and laundries, with separate rooms for men and women. At one time there were 20 throughout the city. They gradually closed after World War II, when indoor plumbing became increasingly available.
