using public data for stuff feels like cheating sometimes
like, google maps and friends charge money and rate limit their APIs like hell and so on, but i can go download a half a gig of county parcel bounds and spam the county real estate database 10 times/sec for free
i can get the name of the owner of any property in my area
for free
it's so wild
it's not even that difficult either, especially if you've got moderate programming skill! but even if you don't they all have maps and human readable versions!! it's fun to just explore around sometimes!!
there is legitimately an absurd amount of govt.-maintained data, just, free to look at!!! fuck them aggregators that charge licensing fees and shit, go find out who the last owner of your house was! go see if your landlord pays their taxes!!!
or just ignore it! but there's a wealth of data out there to be played with for free, and i think that's kinda crazy

The Red Line Archive is a mobile public art project that engages New York City residents in a conversation about race and the history of the 1938 Red Line Map that helped create the segregated urban landscapes of the city. This “cabinet of curiosities” is wheeled along city streets, inviting people to freely associate about personal artifacts and documents from the artist’s family history in gentrifying Brooklyn and ephemera collected during four artist walks in and along the periphery of redlined neighborhoods. Redlining refers to discriminatory lending practices that prevented African-Americans (and other people of color) from attaining home mortgages and business loans in New York City and urban communities nationwide. Even as loans to blacks were discouraged, real estate brokers actively used racial and economic fear mongering that encouraged white homeowners to sell their properties at reduced prices and move en masse to new suburbs created for them. This was known as white flight.

Drone Hackademy is a temporary hacktivist school, citizen science laboratory and critical theory platform for the use and discussion of unmanned aerial vehicles as a social technology. It is a collaboration between computer engineer & artist Lot Amorós and architect & researcher Pablo De Soto. It took place in June 2015 in Rio de Janeiro with ten participants aged between 19 and 49
The participants are chosen through a public call with the objective of bringing together people of different backgrounds and knowledge fields: filmmakers, mediactivists, artists, architects, researchers, geographers, biologists, hackers, software developers, etc. We practise positive discrimination welcoming people from low income classes, limited access to technology and also those how represent activist groups. #Dronehackademy aims to create a community of learning, “situated knowledge” exchanges and action
