I just got my query and first chapter pages back from my agent critiques for the workshop I did earlier this month. I was totally expecting a blow by blow breakdown of what I need to fix, but she basically said “you know exactly what you’re doing. You’re doing everything right. Just make some small changes to elevate it and you’re good.”

She also said she could totally tell I love the YA fantasy genre and that’s got me like 😭😭😭😭😭

This totally means my not getting any traction with Regardless thus far is not because I’m a horrible writer with no market, but because I really haven’t found the right agent yet.

I’m one of those writers who has gone this long without seeking out critiques for my novels because I don’t like people telling me how to write (my immediate response to criticism against my writing choices/style is “YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO! YOU’RE NOT MY REAL MOM!”). But one thing I think I am learning from beta readers and editors, is that the conclusion I tend to come to again and again after I’ve given critiques some thought, is “oh, they don’t understand what I’m trying to do here”. And that’s the perfect opportunity to then ask “why don’t they understand? How can I be more clear in what I’m trying to get across?” And that’s far more productive than dismissing critiques outright.

I’m really excited about the prospect of being able to query Haunt Your Murderers as a novel that’s all queer, all the time, with a central F/F romance featuring flawed, complex female characters. I have a feeling agents are gonna lose their minds. It’s giving me that extra drive to finish this first draft and really make this manuscript the masterpiece it deserves to be. ✨

Okay, I’m finishing NaNoWriMo today, and then I’m taking the remaining days of November to set myself up for Regardless edits. I just signed up for a query bootcamp with agents starting next week (wow, it’ll be nice to actually get feedback from agents for once!) I basically have the weekend to play with the first section of Regardless to submit my query and first pages for that. And then I need to get my full manuscript over to my editor by December 14th, and I should be getting both criques back around the same time come January!

...I just really need people to kick my ass to get my shit together with these manuscripts of mine because I really wanna get back to querying, but I know Regardless has very specific problems that need fixing. But I also know agents still aren’t digging my queries for some reason. I dunno why that is and it’s driving me crazy, so we’re gonna find out!!!

The end of 2018 is really go big or go home for me, I guess! I just wanna start 2019 by hitting the ground running as best I can.
