January 11 was a day of joyful celebration at The Academia Bautista de Puerto Nuevo in San Juan. After 112 days of no power due to hurricane damages, they finally have running electricity in the school. The school posted a video on Facebook showing students and teachers celebrating the electricity being restored to their school.

Before Hurricane Maria hit PR, Yerianne Roldán & Zuleyka Avila were set on finishing their senior year strong and preparing to attend colleges in Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, hurricane damages forced both students’ families to relocate to Orlando, FL; roughly over 7,200 students have relocated to Orlando since Sept 20. Both girls have had to meet with a school counselor to sift through college choices; something they had already done in PR. Even still, they are optimistic and have continued planning their futures respectively.

Schools in FL, CT, NY, PA and TX have seen an influx of PR students; estimates of 14,000 students have left PR since 9/20. In FL, Gov. Scott waived the mandate of immediately providing shot records and birth certificates for PR students. In CT, Gov. Malloy, stated in a letter to school officials that students affected by Maria must have immediate access to school.  The recent diaspora has been heartening for many students. However, schools and governors are making it easier for them to quickly continue their education.

According to Puerto Rico’s Dept of Ed, more than 98% of the schools are open for at least part of the day. However, a small amount of schools are still serving as shelters. Libertada Iraldo was one of those schools. The middle school students relocated to the high school until Dec 15. Students are happy and eager to return to their studies.

Like many schools in Puerto Rico, Escuela Adrienne Serrano in Vieques, quickly opened up after the community cleaned and repaired the school themselves. On October 18, Humacao School District’s regional director told the school to suspend classes until firefighters certified them. Still, the school continued to keep its doors open for the students. Additionally, the Center for Education Reform and Puerto Rico’s Secretary of Ed have referred to this moment as an opportunity to reform the school district. They have compared it to how New Orleans restructured most of the schools post Katrina.

Kids though aren’t as concerned with school reform as they are about their interrupted education. Compounding the situation is the fact that thousands of teachers and students have moved to the US and it is unknown how many teachers will return by the January 8, 2018 deadline given to reclaim their jobs.

Since October 23, over a month after Hurricane Maria severely damaged Puerto Rico, 1,081 out of 1,112 public schools have reopened for education. Throughout the aftermath of Maria, 190 schools served as community centers and 70 served as shelters.
