Worn Stories: Kigurumi
If you ask a Californian what they think is a comfortable temperature, it’s likely a small range between 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Growing up, my father always told me to dress lots of layers during the winter, as he was deathly afraid of the cold. Temperatures don’t seem that cold when compared to other areas like Chicago or New York but for us Californians, 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit equals freezing. The most logical solution to beat the cold was to turn on the heater, I thought, but my father was very stingy with the gas bill, so our heater would stay off, no matter how cold it got. Because of that, our only option was to dress the many layers as my father said.
My father was okay waddling around the house with 4 layers of jackets on, but for me, it felt extremely constricting to wear so many layers when doing work. At first, I thought to wrap a blanket around me, but as I worked, the blanket would quickly slip off my shoulders and fall, which became a nuisance whenever I wanted to focus. In the end, I found out about kigurumis, which I thought could be the perfect solution to my chilly troubles. I found a design I liked, ordered it, and waited for it to ship.
Trying it on for the first time was exactly want I wanted it to be. Not only did it fit perfectly, but it provided warmth without the bulky layers. I could focus on my work and not have to think about the layers of clothing constricting movement. Since then, my kigurumis have become a second skin every winter. Whenever I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is slip on that kigurumi, get cozy, and start my work for the day.
