Uncle Ng
Fri 2019/08/23
Today over breakfast Uncle Ng regaled me with a glowing account of his last visit to Penang with his family members, including showing me pictures of the places he had visited and the food he had eaten. Most of the places eg Penang Hill and Chew Jetty and the food eg Air Itam laksa and fried oyster that he described, I could relate to because I had experienced them myself before. However, as each person's experience is different and unique to him only, I piled him with questions as he told me the story of his Penang adventure. No matter how familiar you are with a subject matter, if you listen intently to the narrative of the story teller without judgement and presumption you can always learn something new. For example Uncle Ng mentioned about a tunnel somewhere on the railway track up Penang hill and even showed me a picture of the tunnel. I don't recall the coach passing through a tunnel on my last visit to Penang hill in 2016, or maybe it did and I have forgotten about it. So the next time I go to Penang, I will remember to look out for the tunnel.
Roti Bulat
Fri 2019/08/23
Restoran 22. One day, while eating roti bakar, I saw a customer ordered a type of round bun. Out of curiosity, I asked the waiter the name of the food that the customer was eating. "Roti Bulat," the Indonesian waiter said. Remembering that particular conversation with the waiter, today I ordered "Roti Bulat" instead of the usual roti bakar just for the experience of trying something new. "Steamed atau bakar?" the waiter asked me back. "Bakar". It turned out that toasted roti bulat is a burger-style sweet bun stuffed with kaya filling. If I had known, I would have asked for margarine filling or plain instead of the kaya filling, because the bun itself is already sweet tasting.

Rori King
Sun 2019/07/21
Roti King (即烘面包王 / jí hōng miànbāo wáng) bun stall. Very good business. Most of the buns are already sold out by lunch time. Unlike other shop-based bakeries this franchise enterprise operates from a portable tent pitched up by the roadside, a few tables and chairs and uses two stoves to bake a large range of buns daily on the spot. In PUJ 3 the operator strategically sets up the stall on the kerbside at the street intersection in front of Restoran 22
Uncle Has His Own Wheels
Thu 2019/07/04
Surprise! Uncle Ng has now got his own wheels. Inviting me out for lunch, this 90-year old uncle insisted on driving me around PUJ 3 with his white MyVi. In the past, it is usually the other way round; I am the driver of my own car and he is the passenger. Even at his advanced age, I'm confident of his driving ability. I remember the time in 2018 he drove me around Kluang town in a borrowed Kancil.

Pasembur Vendor
Sun 2019/06/09
The vendor is preparing our order. Haven't eaten Pasembur (Penang Rojak) and drunk fresh coconut juice for a long time.
