August 6, 1943 Dear Ma, Boy is this wonderful. I’m in a Pullman (1) now. I have a lower bunk right by the window. We got the Pullman at El Paso. This is just like a holiday now. We have nice toilets & washrooms too. This is going to be the first time in some time I’ve taken my clothes [off] to sleep. We went through some awful hot desert to-day. We’re in Arizona now. We also saw some high mountains. It’s nice & cool now. From what I hear it gets cool at night in the desert. Well I guess that’s all for now. We’ll be in California to-morrow.
