That voice…what was it? What was…

'Systems online. Are you functional?'

Am I…am I functional? What?

'Systems online. Ezreal, are you functional?'

She knows my name. She knows who I am. 

"…I am functional."

'Assessment complete. Welcome back, Ezreal.'

"Welcome back? Welcome back where?"

'Date is set at 3200 CLE. Cryogenic stasis has been terminated.'

"…Cryo…genic?"

'Yes. Cryogenic.”

"…you mean, I’ve been asleep?"

'Correct. Asleep as well as preserved.'

My heart started beating again after PEARL’s last word, and I felt myself gasp loudly as a cold, deep breath expanded my previously-frozen lungs, though out of shock or necessity I still didn’t know. My head felt heavy as I attempted to move it, but my neck was so stiff I simply gave up and lulled back into the stasis pod, my body trembling with the first twinges of life in over three-thousand years. I didn’t know where I was, but all I knew was that everything had changed. Everything.

My eyelids were even heavier than my body, which was strange. Regardless, I welcomed it. I welcomed the darkness, because for a time, it was all I knew. 

I wanted to know it again. I wanted to stay in the dark. 

I didn’t want to know what was out there after so long, and a part of me still believed that I was still asleep. Maybe I was.

Maybe I am.
