HOUSTON WE HAVE GERMINATION
Two of Kolya's four have germination, none of Persephone's yet. Day 8 from sow on the dot. Wheeeeeeee!
I wasn't going to pumpkin patch this year because last year was so terrible and I am going to be away all summer BUT @pumpkin-patch inspired me so let's goooooooo
Here's my starting point. It's probably too early and it's DEFINITELY too cold but it's s nice temperature for me to work outside and the ground is soft (but not soggy) from yesterday's rain and another storm is blowing in tomorrow, so what the hey.
My dilemma is this. The easiest way to clear everything is to just hoe it all under BUT I like yo leave the nettle leafed verbena for the pollinators and the wild flowers I put down last year are actually wild flowering. Look at that alyssum - everybody loves alyssum.
The hemlock is going away even though it's apiaciae because you don't mess around with hemlock. The parasitic wasps can make do with the wild carrots. And grass, of course, can die in a fire
We interrupt this painting project to bring you NEW BABY PUMPKINS!
Absurdly fast germination on one of the Kolya replants
And this a tiny newborn Persephone seedling!
Behold my extremely detailed squash seed organization
Koko's seeds are getting pretty old these days - I harvested her 2021 and the cotyledons have been having holes in them and I get a lot of weird mutated pumpkins off of them
Katisha is the same year as Koko, but hasn't so far had the same issue
Persephone is Koko's most successful daughter, harvested 2023, so also starting to get quite old, but that's where I need to continue the line from.
I dunno. Should I keep planting my K-seeds or should I just do straight Persephone?
Two new sprouts in the pumpkin patch today!
The fourth Kolya seedling
And the third Persephone seedling!
I only have one ungerminates seed since the replant
And here's my earlier seedlings
I need to take more of that grass out but they all look so good!
PUMPKIN PATCH UPDATE!
I got
Flax!
Nettle-leafed Verbena! I leave it in because it's native and the bees love it
My fence pumpkins are established after the horrifying ordeal of being transplanted
My mystery pumpkin transplant is thriving
My two (2) Kolya offspring are doing well. I replanted the other two
Oh it looks like more babies coming from the fence pumpkin burial site. I should probably transplant those.
None of my Persephone seeds sprouted so I've got four of those to replant but - wait wait what's this???
IT'S A BIRTHDAY MIRACLE!! The cotyledons look a bit damaged like what I was seeing on Koko's sprouts last year so these seeds might be getting geriatric but I got one I got one!!! And replanted three more! Wheeeee!!!
No germination yet on my pumpkin patch but all the transplants seem to be thriving!
