PUNK ROCK IN CANADA
The late 1970s was a great time for drugs, sex, magic and rock and roll. Especially in Canada, the 70's mainstream radio was booming with all sorts of Canadian rock music, an example being Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Rush. Mind you, this was a different time, at this time it was either Rock music or pop (Disco,) and Canada, was the prime example of Rock's greatest stars, I remember reading a statistic (I may be wrong on this) of Canadian music and it indicated that about 50% of music on the radio (which means in the United States also) was Canadian Rock. This is a great accomplishment for our country. But, obviously now times have changed and we would be even lucky enough to hear a Canadian rock band, on the Billboard 100.
The 70's was an amazing time for Canada and rock music. And with every mainstream category there will always be an underground scene, and in Canada, you would have found this scene at an old rundown bar in Toronto, when in the late 70's REAL punkrock had reached it's peak in Canada.
There isn't much left of this genre today, especially in Toronto, you may be lucky enough to find a punk band playing an open mic, but they will be playing among a bunch of disgusting devil screaming screamo bands. So unfortunatey, thats what basically remains of Punk these days in Canada. Unless perhaps we can find an emerging scene in PEI, other than that I have no idea where I can look.
Until then, watch the video above and reminisce on the good times of Toronto Punk
