so i saw you on my post about witchcraft and i was wondering if you could suggest books, how you started, the way altars work/are they required?? thanks so much for anything you can offer! -punksm0ker
Well, honestly some of the best books you can start with are real books on topics that interest you. If you search on by blog the tag ‘witchy help’ you might find some good suggestions, but take a look at the different types of witches out there and see what interests you.
Do you like being outside and gardening and talking to plants? Look into green witchcraft. Do you like to cook and bake and use herbs and spices in food? Look into kitchen witchery. More at home with computers and wires than stones and grass? Techno witchery might be a good choice for you. There’s sea witches, fairy witches, ice witches, time witches, art witches, healing witches, chaos witches, blood witches. If you pick an area to work within, at least starting out, it will keep it from being overwhelming.
Once you pick an area to look into, learn stuff about it! Read books about the folklore of the ocean, how sailors survive in storms, about pirates and mermaids and the anatomy of whales. Judas Ikes is a good author to look into, but their books are a bit on the pricey side. If you do get a specifically witchcraft oriented book always make sure you are fact checking your information with scientific sources. Don’t use witchcraft as a replacement for human interaction or professional medical help.
I personally started learning witchcraft through Wicca, but that was MANY years ago (tbh I was drawn to it in like, eh, seventh grade) I have since become a secular witch. It’s an important distinction to make, that witchcraft is not inheritantly tied to any religion and that anyone can call themselves a witch regardless. I am what is called “energetically sensitive”. I feel energy inside everything, inside myself and inside trees and rocks and computers and power lines and floor boards of houses. Learning to manipulate the energy around is how I came to have my strongest understanding of witchcraft.
Altars are not necessary at all. If you end up working with the divine or with spirits you want to honor then by all means build an altar. But you do not have to practice your craft in a specific special place you build. Some people build altars because they feel it is easier to connect to the energies if the created a “touchstone” where the energy can always live and be active.
Whew, that was a lot of information! If you have any more specific questions please feel free to ask away ^__^ I am primarily a practical and green witch though I have some ties to a certain watery Prince that I cannot explain. Practical witch means that I do small enchantments and minor spells to help assist my daily life, particularly with my wards and my anxiety issues. Green witch means I work heavily with plants (*points a Nettle* my pointy uncle) and their energies in my spells and such. I am also a shapeshifter in training, though I am afraid I cannot teach or tell much about that simply because idk what I am doing it mostly just happens sometimes and I just go with it. And finally I am a “bath witch” so a lot of my larger rituals take place in a tub :D
