Finally uploading some of my notes on different parts of punk subculture! First and foremost: Battlejackets.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
also known as battle vests or cut offs
typically denim or leather vests/jackets which are decorated with patches, studs, pins and other embellishments that show off the wearer's interests, affiliations and political opinions
battle jackets are a staple of punk and metal fashion and are used to show off and honour beloved bands alongside political statements (more associated with Punk than Metal)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During WW2, airforce pilots were known to decorate their flight jackets with images associating them to their squadron and later pop-culture iconography
this was a form of silent opposition to the levels of military command which aimed to create “faceless and replaceable soldiers” - Discorder Magazine
following the end of the war, many pilots joined motorcycle clubs as a way to relive the speed/adrenaline of flying
the sleeves of the jackets were often removed as they were restrictive when driving the motorbikes
members of these clubs would often wear their old flight jackets as biker jackets given the protection the materials provided
clubs/gangs typically didn’t get along and became known for their brawls which displayed their extreme devotion to their various clubs (possibly driven by the lack of mental health treatment following the war)
gangs would decorate their jackets with specific icons and colours to show their affiliation/loyalty to the group
bikers continued to decorate their jackets but moved away from painting the fabric (as it chipped off easily) to sewing patches on
this led to a movement towards denim jackets over leather as they were easier to sew
Punks became the first non-gang group to begin customising their jackets in such a way, leaning more towards band, pop-culture or political (in particular anarchic) iconography
given their popularity, general rock and metal fans quickly followed and it became a staple of these communities
punks often decorate jackets with pins, spikes, chains, anti-political statements and DIY mends
following the punk morals of DIY and avoiding capitalistic contribution: most jackets are thrifted/pre-owned

These notes aren't gonna be in any particular order, just short summaries of my research on whatever topic I happen to be into at the time. If you've any topic suggestions (in relation to punk) or anything I should add to my notes please let me know!
I'm new to punk and hyperfixated on the subculture so this is my little way of exploring it <3
