PUPPETEERS OF LANKA
Also nördlich von uns in…

A 90-minute train ride brought me from Prague to Plzeň, Czech Republic.
Plzeň (also called Pilsen in German), is a city in western Bohemia in the Czech Republic. About 90 kms (56 mi) west of Prague, it is the fourth most populous city in the Czech Republic with a 2015 population of 169,000.
The city is known worldwide for Pilsner beer, created by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll here in 1842. From the end of the 17th century, the architecture of Plzeň has been influenced by the Baroque style.
Plzeň is also known for its famous Puppet Museum, or Muzeum Loutek.
The first marionettes appeared in the Czech lands in the second half of the 17th century in productions by groups of actors from Germany, Italy and Austria. The adopted foreign repertoire of plays was frequently also performed by live actors, and from approximately the mid-18th century, Czech-language variants appeared.
I spent part of an afternoon being amidst these imaginatively detailed creatures. Though inanimate they still possess a magical quality that makes one feel a 5-year-old again.
Here, the eighth of eight 1Suitcase publications featuring Plzeň’s Puppet Museum, or Muzeum Loutek.

My next stop after Helsinki, Finland was Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.
And one of the treats of my visit to Tallinn was its Puppet Museum or Nuku Teater.
Housed on a few floors in an Old Town historic building — including a Cellar of Horrors — are more than 100 puppets from decades of Estonian Puppet Theatre. The oldest puppet dates back to 1938.
The museum offers a good overview of puppetry from props, costumes and technological solutions to puppet making workshops and a puppet research center. One can watch puppet masters and sculptors repairing and creating carcasses, control mechanisms and dummies.
The collection includes puppets from around the world that can be manipulated by touch screen. A history of the Estonian State Puppet Theatre since its establishment in 1952 to the present day is provided.
And really it is just good fun being amidst these imaginatively detailed creatures. Though inanimate they still possess a magical quality that makes one feel a 5-year-old again.
The 4th of four posts featuring Tallinn’s Puppet Museum.

Indian puppet, but I cannot remember all the details. I'll update this when I can remember... But yea... puppets are awesome.
