Goretober Day 5: Bandages
mutual i am so deathly curious.. how did puppy and doc come to develop their relationship as it stands? i did see how they met and the like (yes i scrolled back in the puppy tag. i enjoy him.) but what was the catalyst for them getting so close and what's that like for them? you've made a really intriguing dynamic with them and i want to know more..!
terrible way to start this but have you seen the minions movie? cause it's kinda like that. Puppy and Doc work well together because they both fulfill a very specific role for each other, Doc's role being that of a leader that's actually worthy of respect and obedience, Puppy's role being wholly devoted to Doc and incredibly violent, willing to do terrible things for him, etc
Puppy has a hard time with the whole "free will" thing. no real interest in marching to the beat of his own drum or pursuing his own goals. he has wants/desires but those are usually in the form of physical things. guns, sports cars, hell the first thing he did once he was healed enough to leave the building alone was go get a bunch of tattoos just because he thought they were cool. he's materialistic in that sense but easy to please (if you have Doc's bank account that is)
the free will struggle is where it kinda started though. his routine got rocked hard after dissenting and he didn't really know what to do with himself without someone to answer to, so he followed Doc around like a guy with no friends at a party. bodyguard became the official title just so Puppy could feel like he had a purpose, but really Doc would've let him just hangout if he hadn't been fidgety and tense the whole time. every now and then he'll get an actual mission but dude has mild separation anxiety so it's never for anything long term. for the most part he hangs out in Doc's office or lab, at attention if there's other people around and either quietly spacing out or scrolling on his phone when they're alone. Doc enjoys the company, he's slowly teaching him ASL even though Puppy prefers to either text or do charades/body language for simple things
at some point, Doc finds out that Puppy watches him while he sleeps. mind you, Puppy has a whole ass room of his own on the other side of the hallway, but Doc wakes up to the glow of his mask staring at him in the dark, and while it startles him at first he's very quick to beckon him into his arms and let him stay the night. that turns into something of a routine, Puppy always waiting to be invited before crawling into bed with him
things slowly escalate from there. Doc is attracted to him for a lot of reasons, and frankly you can only share a bed every night with a guy for so long before you start to feel some type of way about him. he's careful and patient with his approach, unsure if Puppy even can feel that way about someone. lingering touches during the day, tracing nonsense patterns into his back and shoulders at night, gauging his reactions, the way he always leans into the attention and never away, his pulse picking up a bit sometimes
at some point Doc hits him with a very casual "good boy" in passing after a mission done well, and he gets a very different reaction. Puppy freezes at first and Doc asks him if he's alright, and he can only really shrug, standing there awkwardly and wringing his hands but he's red down to his neck and chest so Doc doesn't press. it's the first emotion he's shown besides indifference or bloodlust and it leaves him restless for the remainder of the evening, fidgety, opening and closing his phone like it holds an answer inside, getting up every so often to pace and stare out the window. Doc starts to wonder if he did something wrong
still, Puppy follows him to his room in the evening and doesn't hesitate to crawl into bed with him, but instead of laying at his side he straddles Doc's torso and rests his palms on his chest, seeming almost... frustrated. like he wants something from him he doesn't know how to ask or what to ask for. Doc gets the hint though, asks him if this is about earlier, if he liked it, if he wants more, hands petting at his sides, getting a silent nod in reply. Doc moves slow, dragging lazy kisses up and down his throat and chest, feeling up his waist and thighs, whispering praises in his ear that make him shiver bodily
there's some apprehension about going further than that. does Puppy actually know what he wants or what he's getting into? does any of this matter to a soldat beyond the physical aspect? this happens a few times and the frustration is only mounting, which is precisely how Puppy finds himself in the medbay asking Skinner for help
for the record, Puppy likes Skinner. hard not to like someone that spent months putting you back together
more or less something to the effect of "I want our boss carnally and don't know what to do about it". he gets the advice one might expect, "be yourself, tell him how you feel, do what feels right, etc". well what feels right is pinning Doc's hands above his head and grinding down on his lap until the frustration melts away and they're both tired and breathless
and it just kinda turns into a thing between them. nothing either wants to put a label on, far from just friends but nothing really romantic. Puppy would kill and die for Doc and in return he gets anything he wants, a warm bed at night, and as much affection as he can stand. Doc hadn't meant to get attached in all honesty. he's worked with soldats and he knows how they are, but Puppy was put together a bit wrong and he's so devoted and even sweet when it's just them. how was he not supposed to get attached?
