Thanks for the BrickStory hashtag from @purelysalem !! . If I ever had to draw a haunted house when I was a kid, it was always a Second Empire Victorian. I just didn't know it was called that at the time! 😁  To this day, this house style remains the “spookiest” to me. The 1870’s Richard Harrington House on Federal Street is my favorite Second Empire Victorian in Salem.  I lucked out this morning and found the house sitting under a perfectly moody pink sky. But, for me, The Derby House comes pretty darn close.  It was built in 1762 for Elias Hasket Derby, who is believed to have been America’s first millionaire. Right across from Salem harbor! Brick! Formal garden out back! What’s not to love?? But then again I was previously reminded by fellow Salem Instagrammer @historybythesea , that the lack of a bathroom and limited electricity might be a bit of a downer. 🤔 But might the sacrifice be worth it?? . This is my America - beautiful homes and the American flag out front. Thanks for the tag from @purelysalem . The Pickering House is one of the oldest houses in Salem, and is the birthplace of Col. Timothy Pickering in 1745. Timothy Pickering served in the Revolutionary War then went on to become Quarter-Master general of the Army, Postmaster General, Senator, Member of the House of Representatives, and Secretary of State. Pretty impressive! .
