Ryan McGinness Hosts a Nudie Party in Hollywood
Ryan McGinness continued his LA takeover on Saturday night by unveiling his Blacklight Paintings project in The Purple Lounge of The Standard Hollywood. The event - co-produced by The Standard and Country Club Projects - highlighted the launch of his wildly successful Blacklight Nudie Cards (available here) as pole dancers flexed their fluorescent flesh alongside guests (McGinness obligingly looked on with a glass of Guinness in hand). His ambitious West Coast takeover (read: seven openings in six weeks) continues this Saturday evening June 4th from 9pm with a live Drawing Salon Party featuring models posing poolside at The Standard Hollywood. See you there! To view more photos from the Blacklight Party, visit our photo gallery.

What are your feelings about drinking and working?
As with anything, responsibility is paramount, so if you can drink and put on a great a show, go for it.
What is the #1 old-school classic you still bust out every time?
Somehow the Pointer Sisters, "Automatic" finds it's way into my sets, no matter where I'm playing.
(The Pointer Sisters performing "Automatic" on Soul Train, 1984)
Do you have a special closing song of the night?
Nothing in particular, but I love to end an evening with something a little disruptive to the theme and vibe of the night. For example, ending a dance party with "Back to the Old House" by The Smiths. Anything unexpected that lets everyone know that our time together has finished.

A Couple Rounds with iO Tillett Wright
NYC based photographer iO Tillett Wright is known for her black and white photographs of underground outcasts, creatives, and weirdos. Those not familiar with her work should definitely check out her blog and website ASAP. Anyhoo, we've been fans for ages and asked if she'd mind trying her hand at The Box at The Standard, Hollywood. The end result is pretty effing awesome, here's what she had to say about it:

Tells us about your inspiration for your piece in The Vitrine: The installation in the Vitrine is basically my take on what the back room at a seedy, Chinatown boxing match would look like. I shot at these underground boxing events in New York this past winter, that were totally illegal, and became known as male model boxing because they pitted male models against street fighters and boxers. We just brought out a new little book of those photos, called 'KISSER - The Last of The Friday Night Throwdowns', which you'll be able to get for free in any room at the Standard for the month my installation is up. The idea is that the model in there is either waiting for her fight or coming from her fight, and this is her time alone. She's going to photograph herself all month long, and tape it up on the glass, gradually obscuring herself, with images of herself, as models can tend to do.
How do you feel about your art sharing space with a live model? its an interesting challenge, but I like it. It's such a macho thing, this babe in her underwear, in a box, so I gave her back a little of her own macho.

Who are some of your favorite artists? oh man, impossible, these are the first ones to pop to mind....Anders Petersen, William Eggleston, Daido Moriyama, Nan Goldin, Alexander Calder, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Swoon, Jenny Holzer, cocorosie... What inspires you? People - just the freaky weird amazing that happens when people let themselves be themselves for real. What’s the best adventure you’ve ever had in your career as a photographer? I don't know about EVER, but I just got back from Iceland, which was pretty bananas. It's like being on the moon. I couldn't recommend the trip any more highly. And in February I went to Venezuela, which is also mind blowing in a completely opposite sense.

Describe your perfect day: I wouldn't be able to tell you because it would unfold by chance. Today is the first warm day of 2011, and I'm hoping it involves the sun, a mystery adventure to something I've never seen before, a makeout and a nap in the park, a drink at some point, a good meal, and maybe some music or a movie, and a ton of laughing. I'm easy to please apparently. What’s up next for you? I have a solo show and a group show I'm curating opening at Vacant Gallery, in Tokyo, in early August, which I'm pretty psyched about. There'll be a book involved, and hopefully explorations of Japan to take pictures. I'm also working on this massive series of portraits of people in the LGBTQ community across the United States, with the Human Rights Campaign, called Self Evident Truths, that will occupy me until the laws discriminating against them are changed. There are a few other projects in the works, including the edit of Saint Le Roq's music video, which I directed. Just keeping on my toes. :)
