“I have seen you in the temple.”
The candles in the altar room sparked alight as Zigûr entered. His footsteps echoed throughout the room as he walked, a sharp, piercing sound. In the pale candlelight, he seemed to glow faintly, as if the light the candles called to a brighter flame within him.
He had seen this young man in the congregation, when he gave his speeches, when he offered blood to the Void, and in him, Zigûr’s ever-searching eyes had perceived potential. Potential that could be shaped, guided, turned to useful purpose. He was not so cruel as to let it be wasted when he overthrew this island.
“What brings you to the shrine of our Lord at this hour?”
He reached his side, his smile soft, almost fatherly. He ran his hand over the edge of the altar, feeling the blood grooves under his fingertips.
“If your heart is troubled, I will listen.”
