A quick sample puzzle on how to collect clue fragments and collate them to form EVIDENCE for the EVIDENCE BOARD, from the Esoteric Academic (noble) path. This is just an example, and I probably won’t use it unless I run out of ideas, but this is the gist of how an evidence puzzle in my game might work. There will be much simpler puzzles, this is just an example of a multistep one. You can consult the NOTEBOOK screen to remember what clue fragments you have at any time in the game.
PHASE 1: Speak to NPC.
Speaking to Arthur and Bree might inform you of how Father Henry died.
PHASE 2: Investigate (point and click).
Even though Arthur and Bree tell you he was definitely stabbed, further investigation of the body shows that his face is swollen and puffy, with a reddish sticky substance around his lips - not something that would happen with a mere stab wound. You write this down in your NOTEBOOK.
PHASE 3: Internal Monologue (skill checks)
Once you’ve noticed that his face is swollen and puffy, you begin to think to yourself that a stab wound doesn’t cause this sort of post-death reaction. You consider your knowledge of botanicals and (skill check survival/nature/medicine 10 or higher) think of specifically plants that cause anaphylaxis. On a failed check move back one phase and try again. You write this down in your NOTEBOOK.
PHASE 4: Speak to NPC.
You consult the groundskeeper Elroy. He does not like or trust you due to your background. You have to find a different way to get into the greenhouse.
PHASE 5: Investigate (point and click)
On a failed skill check with Elroy you must find an alternate entrypoint to the greenhouse. Upon investigation you find a hidden cellar that functions as a passage all over the house, which will lead to the greenhouse. You write this down in your NOTEBOOK.
PHASE 6: Investigate (skill check)
Upon entering the greenhouse you find yourself face to face with at least 100 kinds of exotic plants. Your investigation puts you face to face with 5 different varieties of fruits, and (skill check 19 investigation/medicine) you determine that the fruit in question was a cherry. You write this down in your NOTEBOOK.
PHASE 7: COLLATE CLUE FRAGMENTS INTO EVIDENCE
You check your NOTEBOOK for all the clues you have collected.
1. Dead body shows signs of severe allergic shock in addition to stabbing.
2. Lips covered in sticky deep red substance that does not match the consistency of blood.
3. Many common household plants can cause anaphylaxis similar to the sympoms found on the dead body.
4. There is a secret cellar that works as a tunnel that runs throughout the whole house, making direct access between rooms a distinct possibility.
5. Cherries can cause anaphylaxis AND their juices can be boiled into a sticky deep red syrup of the same consistency found on the body.
THEREFORE HENRY IS DEATHLY ALLERGIC TO CHERRIES AND SOMEONE KNEW AND WENT AGAINST BREE’S ARRANGEMENTS.
