While it was commonplace for Touya to dart off from home on a moment’s notice, rarely did he ever do so at such a late hour. Even though the boy was feeling chirpy enough to look like he was outright skipping along the beaten path connecting Striaton to Nacrene, his Pokemon were snoring away inside their Pokeballs. Only his Samurott, Delta, walked with him. She trailed alongside him closely, staring him down anxiously with her scarlet eyes as if begging him to let her join them as well. Every few steps he’d stop and pet her, promise her that they’d be there soon and feed her a berry for her trouble.
Truth be told, the only reason he was even awake was because he had slept two full days beforehand. His sleep cycle was so erratic that he’d started waking up every weeknight at 3am, going to sleep as soon as it was midday. As such, he had the permanent complexion of a zombie, and his eyes were consistently leaking rheum no matter how often he checked his face in the screen of his Xtranceiver. However, overall he considered that a small price to pay for privacy. Not a soul wandered around South Unova after night fell save for a few unlucky patrol men, which meant that Touya could enjoy the serene beauty of nature to the fullest without having to worry about ecstatic schoolchildren recognizing him. As he approached the pond he came all the way out there for, he began to take out his fishing rod and remove his shoes. Delta rushed into the water and waited for him to dive in as well, but Touya barely noticed what she was doing because he was too busy trying to settle on what tackle to use. She started barking at him in annoyance, and soon enough the two started going back and forth like siblings over him not getting in and her scaring all the fish away.
As usual, his Pokemon’s stronger will ended in him conceding defeat, so he put his gear aside and peeled of his clothing layers down to a pair of cheap thermal underpants. Still not wanting to upset the delicate calm atmosphere that permeated the area, he slid without commotion and simply floated around for what felt like eternity, staring up at the star-studded heavens above him. The route was always so bathed in natural light that Touya absent-mindedly pondered why they even bothered with having officers roam the countryside but he was feeling too lax to question it any further. As hours passed he started to drift away both literally and figuratively, and when he came to he found himself out of the water, laying on Delta’s side as she too rested her eyes.
At first, all was fine. He closed his eyes again and slept a few more minutes before the wind started to bother him, so he stood up and went to find his jacket. It was all he found. His fishing gear, his backpack, his first aid kit and pants were all nowhere to be seen—Upon closer inspection of the area he managed to find his cap floating upstream, but other than that everything was unaccounted for.
He stared grimly at the last spot he remembered putting his things and allowed a sarcastic smile to creep upon his face.
“Okay, it’s official. I’m a jackass.”
