one of the things that boggles me about the silence is their purpose. why do they exist? but then again, there are things in doctor who that are hard to explain...

Honestly, I think the reason that The Silence was formed has been twisted over the years (as tends to happen with other stories and legends and myths). There are an infinite number of reasons that they may have had.

They have obviously formed to ensure that the Doctor never speaks his name. But as to why they don't want him to speak his name? Who knows?

We'll probably find out when the show gets to Trenzelore.
