How do you portray Luna's feelings toward her mother? As we know she watched her die.
this is definitely a very complex question, one that i’ve actually put a lot of thought into. luna of course loved her mother very much while she was still alive, but post death there’s a lot of very complicated feelings. we know that pandora’s death is what enabled luna to be able to see thestrals, she also of course cares still about her & believes that she’ll see her again, as evidenced by Order of the Phoenix:
❝ yes, it was rather horrible, ❞ said luna conversationally. ❝ i still feel very sad about it sometimes. but i’ve still got dad. & anyways it’s not as though i’ll never see mum again, is it? ❞
❝ er— isn’t it? ❞ said harry uncertainly.
she shook her head in disbelief. ❝ oh, come on. you heard them, just behind the veil, didn’t you? ❞
❝ you mean… ❞
❝ in that room with the archway. they were just lurking out of sight, that’s all. you heard them. ❞
the text also provides that harry hears these whispers as well. personally, i headcanon that luna has been known to trespass into the ministry as an adult on the odd occasion that she’s in london to ‘talk’ to her mother, even though she’s not sure she’s certain that her mother can hear her, nor can she hear more than incoherent whispers.
there are times when she’s not sad about her mother’s death, but angry. this comes part & parcel with the fact that she died when luna was only seven years old. this forced her to grow up much faster than intended, as her father despite his best efforts was a wreck. pandora was his anchor in reality, & luna became more unkempt after pandora’s death as a result of the more lax parenting. this isn’t to say that xenophilius wasn’t trying his best, he simply wasn’t prepared. i also believe that luna stayed with her mother’s body for several hours, & that her father wasn’t home at the time, & i believe that in those hours she cycled through the grieving process at an alarming rate that fundamentally changed her, causing her to be a much more somber & unrelentingly honest. while she was always very honest, she stopped feeling such a need to try to decorate the truth or skirt around it.
