"I have to do this, there's no other way!" for brianna + aloth 👀
thank you for the prompt elli! 💕
relationships: aloth & watcher, edér & watcher
notes: spoilers for the beginning of the white march dlc
Aloth bent over, leaning heavily on his knees for support. He glanced up to see Kana was looking just as winded as he felt. Sagani and the Watcher looked slightly better, and Edér hadn’t even broken a sweat. Grieving Mother, as always, looked unperturbed, but Aloth learned long ago not to judge her by appearances.
The Watcher and her companions had just arrived in Stalwart. They had been greeted by an ogre attack and had spent the last twenty minutes or so running from spot to spot fighting them. Itumaak seemed to have enjoyed the chase.
Aloth heard Brianna let out a small sigh. He followed her line of sight and saw a large plume of smoke rising in the pale blue sky.
Brianna shouldered her bow and turned to face her companions.
“I know you guys are tired, but we’ve gotta move. Someone might be in trouble over there,” she said, jerking her thumb in the direction of the rising smoke.
“You never get tired of poking your nose in other people’s business, do you?” Sagani said as the group started to move. Her tone was fond rather than chiding.
“What can I say? A Watcher’s work is never done,” Brianna replied, smiling.
Aloth couldn’t help but smile, too. In the time he had known the Watcher, he had found her to be a person of unusual kindness. She spared no thought for herself when others were in need. He had been surprised that despite the cruelty she had experienced in her life, she was still full of empathy.
They made their way to the source of the smoke; a house was ablaze and a handful of Stalwart citizens were attempting to put the fire out.
“Hurry! Keydy and Lurgolder are still in there!” a man shouted as he ran by Aloth.
Brianna turned to Edér. A silent conversation seemed to pass between them within the span of a second and Edér nodded. “Yeah, I’m with you,” he said.
Brianna and Edér quickly shed their weapons. Brianna began to run towards the burning building and Edér followed, as he always did. Alarm bells went off in Aloth’s head. His heart clenched. I can’t let her do this, he thought.
“Brianna, wait!” Aloth shouted.
Brianna spun around to look at him, her brow furrowed, as he ran to meet her.
“Don’t do this,” Aloth begged. A look of understanding came over her face.
“I’ll be fine, Aloth,” Brianna said, placing her hand on his arm “The others, they don’t have my endurance. And I’m not sending Edér in by himself after two people.”
She squeezed his arm. “I have to do this, there’s no other way.”
Aloth held her gaze for a moment, then glanced at the burning building.
“Be careful,” he pleaded.
Brianna nodded. “Always,” she replied.
Brianna and Edér ran into the burning building. Sagani, Kana, and Grieving Mother moved to stand with Aloth closer to the fire. Itumaak came and sat at Aloth’s feet.
“She will be fine,” Grieving Mother said, her chimes clinking softly as she moved to get a better view of the building, “The Watcher is not a reckless woman.”
Aloth knew she was right, but couldn’t shake loose the knot of anxiety in his gut.
After several long minutes, Edér emerged with a woman slung over his shoulders. The Watcher’s companions rushed forward to help. Edér was covered in soot, but unharmed.
“Where is the Watcher?” Kana asked.
Edér coughed before he said, “I’m not sure. We got separated. She told me to get the woman and get the Hel out. Said she’d kick my ass if I went back in.”
Edér glanced at the burning house. “Good thing I was never one for followin’ orders,” he said lightly before moving back inside.
About a minute later, Brianna and Edér appeared at the entrance, supporting a man on both their shoulders. The villagers took him and laid him down next to the woman just as the roof of the home collapsed.
Aloth quickly made his way to Brianna’s side. She, too, was covered in soot, but looked unharmed. She was coughing lightly and examining her long hair, which had been lightly singed.
A woman approached Brianna and said, “Ondra’s tides, it’s a good thing you got Keydy and Lurgolder out. I thought for sure that thing was coming down and taking both of you with it!”
Brianna smiled. “It was a close thing. We’re glad we could help,” she replied.
Aloth knew intellectually that Brianna was safe, but he still had that anxious knot in his gut. He stayed close to her side the rest of the day. And if he placed his bedroll next to hers for the next few nights, well, no one said anything about it.
