It's been a little minute since our Art Gallery last March...but now that we have a little bit of $$fund$$ it's time to have an extravagant Art Contest. And by extravagant, we mean it's still located in the hood but winners get $$$cash$$$ and gift prizes! The rules are simple. Email us that you are submitting ***serious entries only*** and must include a one liner about who you are, what art you do and what you are thinking about submitting. Deadline to inform us is Aug. 4th! Show up August 5th (its first friday so it's hard to forget) with your mama, your cousins, your friends and let the CROWD and our lovely three JUDGES decide who gets prizes. 7PM until. Food and refreshments on us. We have $500 to give away y'all. We know you ain't rich so you might as well submit. You can be a singer, painter, writer (spoken word), photographer, or any kind of artist. You can submit any theme, but ***spoiler*** our judges will always have a soft spot for the following theme: • Anti-colonialism or Decolonize! • Degentrification aka De-fuckification • LAND LIBERATION or Afrikatown themed • Black & Indigenous solidarity or POC solidarity • Resistance! (from ACAB to Black Power) • pretty much the most badass, radical submission will definitely win. If I were you, I'd start making some art. As usual, Afrikatown are throwing a BIG BLOCK PARTY to celebrate our community and neighbors and the fact that we are sticking to our promise to fight gentrification in Oakland. We deserve it, you deserve, so let’s celebrate that undeniable fact. The property owner served Afrikatown a preliminary injunction for trespassing (to be effective May 24th!) We urgently need your support for legal fees as well as the powerful punch of having everyone in town on our side. Save the date: Saturday, May 28th! This fundraiser will support potential court/legal costs! We will have STATIONS such as: *Homemade pizza from our cobb oven (pick your own garden ingredients) *Petting Zoo with our chickens (who don’t want to be trespassed either) *Shirt silkscreen *Permaculture 101 and herbalism *Healing: Massage & Reiki *Pennies for Afrika: Learn more about current Afrikan liberation & unification efforts!
