Please join us at 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, for Hearts Desire, the monthly reading series of the Bay Area Public School, with Nada Gordon, Brenda Hillman, and Sara Jane Stoner at the Omni Oakland Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave. http://heartsdesirereadingseries.tumblr.com/ http://bayareapublicschool.org/ Nada Gordon was born in Oakland in 1964 and has lived in Bolinas, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Brooklyn. Her seven books of poetry include Vile Lilt, Scented Rushes, Folly, and V. Imp. A founding member of the Flarf Collective, she has performed widely in the USA and abroad. Her poems have been translated into Japanese, Icelandic, Hebrew, and Burmese. She teaches English as a Second Language at Pratt Institute. Brenda Hillman has published chapbooks with Penumbra Press, a+bend press, and EmPress; she is the author of nine full-length collections from Wesleyan University Press, the most recent of which are Practical Water (2009), winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Award, and Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire (2013), which received the International Griffin Poetry Prize for 2014. With Patricia Dienstfrey, she edited The Grand Permission: New Writings on Poetics and Motherhood (Wesleyan, 2003), and has co-translated Poems from Above the Hill by Ashur Etwebi and Instances by Jeongrye Choi. Hillman teaches at St. Mary’s College where she is the Olivia C. Filippi Professor of Poetry; she is an activist for social and environmental justice. Born and raised in Colorado, Sara Jane Stoner has been pinned between multiple genres, writerly imperatives, and identities too long to say, but has been certain since college that her deepest loves were a queerness that forced no distinction between politics and art, and the body of the sentence. Sara pursued an MFA in Fiction from Indiana University, where she continued to study and write between genres. After working in publishing, she had the enormous fortune to join the PhD program in English at CUNY Graduate Center, a community of scholar-artists and critical pedagogues, where her desire to read and study writing and identities which live or appear at the margins or in the crosshairs of multiple genres and subjectivities found a home. She has taught writing and literature at Brooklyn and Baruch Colleges, as well as at The Cooper Union, where she has also worked in the Writing Center for almost a decade, in addition to teaching classes on queer theory, Gertrude Stein, and “radical” education. Presently, she serves as the Reviews Editor for The Poetry Project Newsletter, works on her dissertation, and continues to boldly, speculatively hire people to work at the unaccredited free college she will help found in the not-so-distant future. Her first book, EXPERIENCE IN THE MEDIUM OF DESTRUCTION, was published in February by Portable Press@Yo-Yo Labs. She lives in Brooklyn with Madness, her cat.
