Can't Tell Me Nothing { quaexlupus }
Sade had never thought she would make it into a college that was this upper class, hell she hadn't even thought she would graduate high school - the rate of people who graduated in her neighborhood was a single digit and those who dropped out....well, she didn't want to think about that as she stared at her alarm clock. The glowing red digits in the dark read a time she wasn't used to getting up at, even for high school, but then again this entire experience was an entirely new one for her. She had grown up in a small two bedroom apartment with her mother - her father had been some high and mighty guy who had a high rise apartment downtown who had had her mother one drunken night and then claimed he had never seen her mother. That always left a bitter taste in Sade's mouth, and suddenly she felt something in her light the fire to achieve greatness and she pushed her heavy blanket off the bed.
The floor was ice cold and she danced across it to the door and opened it quickly before then making a quick, short leap to the hallway runner they kept out there. Looking down the hall at her mother's room to see the door ajar she blinked a bit, but then looked back to the clock and sighed. She didn't have time to go down there before getting ready for the day. So, she warmed her feet before then leaping off it and going to the kitchen and grabbing an apple that was on the counter and she dug her teeth in, yanking out a small chunk before then smacking her head against the cabinet that she hadn't realized was right behind her. "Fuck." She mumbled around the food in her mouth and then rubbed the back of her head before then grabbing down the supplies to make herself a sack lunch. She didn't have the money to buy food on campus (her scholarship did cover it but she had no idea her options even).
Half an apple eaten and a sack lunch of a sandwich, a bottle of tap water (that had an awkward haze to it), and another apple she folded the bag shut and then went back to her bedroom, closing the door shut as the train rumbled past her window, shaking the floorboards and slowly up into her core. It didn't effect her, though, she had slept through it most nights, actually. It wasn't that big of a deal and so she opened her small closet door and began to look through her clothes, pulling out shirts that were acceptable for high school but she didn't deem worthy for first day of classes at college. Then again she knew that kids would end up wearing pajamas to class, and some things never changed. Hole. Hole. Hole. Ratty as fuck. She kept tossing shirts to the side before she finally settled on a layered top that had some abstract design with a skull on it as the primary focus.
Then she wandered over to the window and pulled the blind down before then pulling off her top and tossing it to the side and pulling on her other shirt and followed suit from sleep pants to jeans and then she pulled her hair over her shoulder and ran her fingers through it once or twice before beginning to braid it, deft fingers working quickly before tossing the braid over her shoulder and she finally turned to her desk and looked it over. The textbooks that were wrapped in plastic and the laptop that sat next to the pile intimidated her, and she was almost afraid to touch any of it. The laptop had been a gift from her family members and she had only set it up, otherwise she had left it alone. She had never had such an expensive item in her life and computers weren't really her friends, but then she looked over at the time she realized that she was going to miss her train if she wasn't out the door in less than five minutes.
Grabbing the laptop she put it into the bag and then zipped it shut quickly and swung it over her shoulders. Grabbing some socks from the clean clothes bin she pulled them on as she started towards the door, and grabbing her lunch before pulling on her shoes. And she looked over her shoulder, and then sighed a bit, going back to the bedroom at the end of the hall. "Mom?" She asked, leaning on the door frame, watching the lump under the blanket move and she sighed a little, coming in closer. "Mom." She repeated a bit more firmly. "Mom, I'm heading out to college."
That made the woman whip her head around at almost a break neck speed and Sade gave her a small, sad smile. Her mother was a woman who had given up on life in a sense and she hadn't really meant to give up, but it had just happened. Sade was the only thing keeping her alive, hence why Sade hadn't moved into the dorms and kept at home. So, she leaned down and gave her a kiss. "Love you." Her mother's words were almost enough to make the brunette sit down and not leave. She repeated the words and then straightened to go and catch her train.
Campus was large and she had been grateful for having come in early because she had gotten lost, twice. She wasn't very good with this directions thing and so with fifteen minutes remaining she found the room and tucked herself in and pressed herself against the back wall. Everyone already seemed to have friends and she cursed herself for having skipped the more social parts of orientation, but she spotted an empty seat and she slid right in and then pulled out her laptop, looking around at all the smiling faces, and she felt incredibly out of place, curling her fingers together as the machine in front of her whirred to life. Everyone else seemed to have cell phones that did the same thing as her computer, and she noticed her lack of phone - they simply couldn't afford them.
Slumping down even more she thought about it and watched as the professor took the front of the class and cleared his throat. Sade instantly closed her laptop and then watched as the syllabus was passed about and they began to go over it. Maybe this wasn't as bad as she was thinking. Once that was done the professor gave a small smirk, and then gave their first assignment, to partner up and get to know someone to present next class. Of course a communication class that was simply required by the university would do this. Instantly Sade began to panic and look around, her eyes falling on a girl with hair the color of fire and no one else seemed to be going to partner with her, so Sade reached out a hand and tapped her shoulder,waiting.
