"Billy Brennan," you murmured to the man over your shoulder, "are you flirting with me?"
His eyes sparked with mischief while his smile widened. "So what if I am? A man is allowed to flirt with a beautiful woman."
"Especially if that woman is his wife," you finished his usual line for him. Your smile had grown to match his.
The evening had been a fun one especially after the day you'd shared together at the dig site. Sure, you'd been interviewing Dr. Grant for your upcoming book while Billy had stayed outside with their few students. It'd been no less grueling for either of you, however.
For all his knowledge and willingness to share it, there was a guardedness surrounding Dr. Grant. No doubt put there from his unfortunate experiences on Mr. Hammond's and InGen's islands of manmade dinosaurs. That same wariness had made some questions you'd been tasked with asking all the harder. They'd taken some of your higher skills with people to get the answers you needed from Dr. Grant, but you'd gotten them. With the completion of his interview, you'd have your next book done within a few weeks, ready for the publishers as promised.
Billy had waited for you outside the RV/office for the dig site. His students had been dismissed for the day and sought out their own forms of entertainment or rest. The site itself had been covered to preserve the fossils they'd unearthed until they could finish their excavation.
When you'd stepped out, he promptly whisked you away for a bite at the nearby town's main tavern where you both could unwind. The place proved just the ticket, too, as you spotted a row of pool tables behind the booths and tables. The smell of greasy food proved too tempting to pass up, having worked up an appetite during your time with Dr. Grant and his master evasiveness on certain key subjects.
The two of you soon found yourselves ensconced at a table where you shared bits of food from each other's plates. You even managed to steal a few of his fries without him noticing. At least, he let you believe he hadn't been looking, but he knew. He always did.
It wasn't long after you finished your plates that you found an empty billiard table where you quickly racked up a new game.
"I missed you today," Billy whispered, leaning close enough to press a kiss to your shoulder. "I thought I would've seen you more. Show you more of what we've been doing, but I didn't make the cut, huh? Oh well, I guess I'll just have to save it for the students. Not sure they'll appreciate it as much, but I'm here to teach them."
Rolling your eyes at his dramatics, you nudged his shoulder with yours. "You know very well I'm here for another few days. Plenty of time to show me all you want before I have head home. My book won't write itself, you know."
"I do know," he agreed, nodding.
You should've known he wasn't done. You really should have.
But you'd turned back to the pool table, intent on playing through your first turn.
Except it was never to happen.
Your sweet bully of a husband swept you up, suddenly and completely. Your cue stick landed with a loud clatter against the polished brick flooring while your arms quickly wrapped around his neck.
"Billy!"
He merely grinned at you. That earlier mischief sparked brighter even as his eyes darkened.
"Brute," you grumbled with a teasing lilt.
He didn't say a word as he carried you out of the town's main tavern.
The look in his eye said it all anyway.
Your limited time was about to be put to good use as was your husband's beat-up truck.
That "Green" liquor so popular in Trek, in my mind is just Absinthe. Drink more and the amount of green fairies you'll see will make you think you're on Vulcan!
