I wish people would. There are a handful of situations where the word slightly does make a statement either more specific or more powerful (I have a dry sense of humor, I in fact understand how this works!). But however confident people are that there are exceptions, I have seen the times these words do not work, and unless someone gets me enough brain bleach to forget, I will not cease encouraging people to find alternatives.
(My favorite dry word, though, remains 'rather': "I was rather upset about pleonasms," I say, wiping the smear of crimson from the end of my knife.)
