Rarely share a “self portrait”, as it’s known in the #historyofpainting or #arthistory . Art history is intertwined with (painted) portraiture. I was aiming to paint some more portraits just a few weeks back (but my canvas order didn’t arrive). Though I’ve been drawing trees, I didn’t think I’d be painting trees (if you’d asked me a month ago), but some of my favourite painters in history made this a favourite subject, so if they can… This emerged from drawing; looking at the world around me. I find it “painterly”; the kind of painting experience that moves and inspires me - meaning it’s about the movement of paint - the energy, the choices, and mark-making of brushstrokes to create a sense of something… that’s all!

Natural progression... don’t try this at home (unless you want to risk upsetting a significant other). I realised what I’ve been missing these past few (up and down) weeks; the energy of painting on this scale. Branching out from my pen tree drawings, to paint with movement...
