The Queen’s Plate is the oldest horse race in Canada, and the oldest continuously run in North America, since 1860 when it was founded, during Queen Victoria’s reign. Interesting to note, it became the King’s Plate whilst Edward VII (1901-1910), George V (1910-1936), Edward VIII (1936) and George VI (1936-1952) were monarchs of Canada, but their combined reigns (51 years) do not come near to the number of years (108) a Queen was the monarch since the inception of the race (which did not begin with Victoria’s reign either!) 

Usually run in late June or early July, the Queen’s Plate has been postponed to September this year, due to the ongoing pandemic.

Yesterday was supposed to be my one day off this week, but I was lucky to attend the Queen's Plate for work instead! (It's essentially Canada's Kentucky Derby.) I had a lot of preconceived notions about horse racing going into the day, all of which were proven wrong. I actually enjoyed watching the races and it was awesome to witness a different horse sport in person. These horses are SO young and the power they have is just incredible. I always thought racehorses were pure profit to their owners, but I saw a lot of rich men in suits bathing their horses on a dirt track yesterday. I wasn't sure how close I could get with my media pass. I asked a security guard and he said "How close do you want to be?" I ended up watching the Queen's Plate while sitting on the edge of the track! Here are a couple photos I snapped of the winner Holy Helena. (Also my outfit.)

Lexie Lou, the fabulous Canadian filly who won the Woodbine Oaks, came back and overthrew the boys in the 155th Queen's Plate.

Now to see if she can win Canada's Triple Crown!

Today I learned gambling is profitable

We were watching the Queen's Plate (horse racing in Canada) at my Aunt's apartment. My dad decided to bet ten bucks on a horse for fun. He's walked away with $175.  Thankfully he's a nice guy and is splitting it amongst the family so I get $40! :D
