My gift for AO3 user EternalLibrary, who requested Irene and Helen's evolving relationship throughout the series, which I looooooooooove. Their circumstances originally positioned them as enemies, but they have so much in common---young princesses elevated to queens in a tumultuous world of men, struggling to keep their small countries alive and independent through whatever means they can. Eugenides, on the other hand, probably thought everything through in meticulous detail except for the fact that he was UNITING THE ONLY TWO WOMEN ON THE PENINSULA WHO ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT PUT UP WITH HIS SHIT

one of my favorite random little details in King of Attolia is the conspiracy room. a random little room in the palace, too small and unfurnished to gather in, too fancy and out-of-the-way to use for storage--there's really nothing it's good for and no one's ever there, so of course people end up using it for clandestine little meetings. and there just happens to be a decorative latticework ceiling :) with an empty space above it :) big enough for someone to hide in :)

it's just such clever architecture/rulership/rulership mediated through architecture. we can't hope to stop nobles from having illicit meetings to discuss their treasonous conspiracies, but we can subtly encourage them to do it somewhere we can eavesdrop :)
