We must speak up and speak out, especially as white content creators and influencers. Something I’ve noticed is the talk about providing an “escape” from bad times on social media. Okay, I get that self-care is important. But it’s not about you. BIPOC content creators and audiences, as well as from other marginalized groups, do NOT have the same luxuries of escapism when their lives are on the line every single day. We as white creators and influencers MUST use our platforms for education, outreach, and awareness—we must not allow ourselves to be complacent. We must do the work if we want to see change, and we MUST protect the voices who are in danger. Now is not the time for cute pets or funny videos. Now is the time for action.
