Advice you didn't ask for, but--I fully recommend giving The Magicians another try! I originally quit during s1 and then picked it up again during s3, and there's a dramatic difference in quality. I'd say so far s4 is living up to expectations. If you're willing to put up with some serious rough patches, the pay-off is immensely satisfying and I have high hopes for the future of the show as well!

Anyway, yes, it seems to have gone some places I definitely would not have predicted from the (7? 9?) episodes of season 1 I watched way back when, which is why I continue to consider it. Unfortunately at the moment I do not have the attention capacity to...engage with fiction...(like, The Umbrella Academy is if nothing else immensely watchable and I couldn’t get through more than three episodes because I Just Don’t Have It In Me), so it will have to wait for some later date when I don’t have a conference paper to write etc. But thanks!
5. what’s your favorite gross guilty-pleasure pairing?
Well, the grossest ship I indulge in, in general, has gotta be Mac & Dennis from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Dennis is a terrible human being and their relationship is fucked up and codependent and delusional in every single way. That being said, I just read a terrific fic of them that I highly recommend, if you’re into this particular brand of grossness.
In regards to Black Sails specifically, I wouldn’t call this ship “gross,” per se, but my biggest guilty pleasure ship is most definitely Jack/Vane. The reason it’s a guilty pleasure is because, in my mind, it’s built entirely on dysfunctional, unrequited feelings, where all they do is use each other for comfort and support but ultimately never make a real go of it. In my headcanon, of the two of them, Jack would be the one who gets closest to catching feelings, but he knows Vane will always be sprung over Eleanor :(. I wish there was more fic exploring this dynamic but there IS one amazing fic that anyone who has ANY interest in this ship NEEDS to read.

Pfffft, so many. All of them. I dont know if there are specific fics I wish I could emulate as much as specific authors. For one, everything @natlet has ever written. Would Julia and Alice make a good couple? I don’t know about good, but they sure as fuck would be compelling to watch. Two A-types, both power hungry, I think they could stimulate each other greatly, possibly go so far either one of them could burn. Depending on which version of Julia and Alice is more at the forefront. Maybe they’ll never burn, maybe they’ll only excel. Power couple in magic and love.

What would happen if Eliot walked in on Margo and Fogg making out? Eliot would be gagged, eyes popping out of his skull. He might try to play it off as casual and make himself scarce in the moment. He can see the appeal of Fogg if he squints his eye, and Margo probably has an ulterior motive here because hotter men do exist. Eliot just needs to know why. He really needs to know why. That’s what he does as soon as he has Margo to himself again. Follow-up question: every detail possible.
