As the second lunch bell rang, Nathan sprang from his seat. “Finally, some food!” he shouted gleefully as he ran from his classroom. “Sorry! ‘Scuse me! Pardon! Commin’ through!” said Nathan to the other hungry students he passed in the hallway. “Come on, come on…” he mumbled to himself as he reached the serving area known to students as ‘Charter Moms.’ “Yes!” he exclaimed as he looked into the glass screen of a refrigerator. In a swift, familiar motion, he had grabbed his favorite drink and lightly closed the door. Next, he grabbed a Reece’s cup or two, then a bag of fruit chews. Oh yeah, he was healthy.
After paying for his food, he set a course to the Multi Purpose Room, which, at these hours, would be being used as a cafeteria for those students who preferred the warm friendly environment over the bitter cold of outside. As Nathan looked around, he hummed; irritated at the large amounts of people in the room. “Nope, not here.” He sighed to himself. “Maybe outside?” and outside they were.
Sitting on their regular A-day bench were two shorter girls. The one farthest from Nathan had short dirty blonde hair and sported a bluish-purple bag which Nathan knew to house the girl’s fan fiction which was only ever to be read by her eyes. The other girl, the closer one to Nathan, had long red hair and, unlike her friend, chose to wear a khaki skirt instead of the regular khaki pants sported by most students.
As Nathan walked up, he could hear the two girls whispering and giggling to themselves, careful as to not be overheard by any lurking freshmen. “Hey PJ. Hey Megan.” he said joyfully to the girls. The whispering ceased instantaneously as they heard his approach.
“Oh, so you’re talking to us again? I thought you were ‘mad’ at us?” the redheaded girl asked.
“Well nice to see you too, Megan.” Nathan muttered.
“Oh, come on,” said the other girl, “you can’t really blame her. You were so sure Friday that you weren’t going to forget to be mad and now look at you. Miss us that much?” inquired PJ in a sarcastic kind of voice.
Nathan’s cheeks reddened as he tried to find the words to reply, “Well yes- I mean no! Wait, um… what was the question?” Okay, so he had forgotten. Last week, the two girls had written a yaoi sex story involving Nathan and a blonde boy named Grant. In anger, Nathan had proclaimed that he wouldn’t talk to the girls for an entire week.
Megan laughed and shook her head. “Come on PJ, let’s go. Wouldn’t want Nathan to break his promise now would we?”
“Aw, but I like it out here. It’s been so long since it wasn’t freezing out side!” protested PJ.
“Don’t worry!” exclaimed Megan, “We’ll go somewhere you’ll like even more.” PJ’s face blushed redder than Nathan’s and she just nodded. The girls walked inside, leaving Nathan standing in confusion. He thought he had heard something strange in her voice. Something he had never heard before. Was it evilness? No, no, he had heard that in her speech plenty of times. Planning? That seemed a bit closer but still not quite what he was looking for.
After a few moments, Nathan realized his friends had left him alone. “Wait for me!” he shouted to nothing in particular before running inside.
He looked around for five minutes. The girls were no where to be found. Not in the MPR or in Charter Moms. Where could they have gone? Nathan plotted a course for the door. Maybe they had gone back outside when Nathan was looking for them?
But when he opened the door that thought quickly vanished from his mind. No one was outside. Not PJ; not Megan; not even Mrs. Hall; who would normally be scouring the ground for trash left by the unmannered freshmen. “Dammit you two.” he mumbled under his breath. Looking down at his unfinished can of Dr. Pepper, Nathan shrugged and went to sit at the closest table. Conveniently, this table was stationed at the perfect look out point. If anyone came through the door, he would see them before they saw him. Not to mention it was close enough to the building to where he could hear the bell that would signal the third-lunchers.
After a couple of minutes, Nathan realized he wasn’t cut out to be alone. Having no one to laugh or tell dirty, inside jokes with got boring really quick. He could swear he was already forgetting how the girls looked. ‘Ah well,’ he thought to himself, ‘Maybe I can make a game out of this. Alright, let’s see. Megan has bright-ish red hair. Kinda like that girl in Mr. Ground’s room! PJ is around Megan’s height and has her royal, not navy, blue coat-jacket thing on. Like that other girl in Mr. Ground’s… Hey there’s Megan and PJ!’ He thought joyfully
“But what are they..?” He sneaked closer to the window. He couldn’t believe he hadn’t seen them before! They both were only a yard or two away from where Nathan sat now. The funny part about that was that both were the same distance from him. He knew because Megan was in PJ’s lap.
Nathan could see the top girl’s lips moving but the sound was too muffled to make out from where he was. The boy put his ear to the window and focused. “-one’s here PJ! Don’t worry! I locked the door behind us and we still have around ten minutes before the bell rings.”
“I know, I know but what if we get caught?” he heard PJ pipe up, “or what if someone hears-!” she was quiet suddenly.
‘Uh-oh!’ thought Nathan, ‘Do they know I’m here?’ he flung himself away from the window, studying the girls to make sure he was wrong. He was. They were still looking only at each other. There’s no way they could have noticed Nathan either because they were… ‘Wait-’ he blinked several times before continuing his thought, "are they… kissing?”
